i just don't get it

I'm definitely in the same boat but whatever works I suppose. Apparently people dig it and stuff happens from it. I think it's like the "real", virtual world of warcraft. But I seriously have no clue.

I guess I get warcraft, the appeal is no different really than the appeal of real D&D and it has the added excitement of a 3d game. I guess second life is sort of the same appeal as Sims or something?

About griefing in SL: Here's the thing. When you invest in property in SL, you are willingly signing up to invest in something that you know anyone can potentially anonymously, and randomly ruin. Yes, griefing is in poor spirit, but the only one at fault is someone thick enough to gamble money they need to pay the bills on such a ridiculous proposition. I can see using it for promotion, but real estate?!? Come on. Terrorists? Please... by that logic we might as well call all day traders terrorists.

you guys missed the boat, the real hot action was at virtual laguna beach!

you lot have griefed all over my blog ;)

haha. although, i wonder. there was that case in the midwest US about the sad lonely emo 13 yr old girl who killed herself after being made fun of on myspace. people take the fake world seriously sometimes

a lot of companies that were hoping to gain something by getting SL exposure for their product have withdrawn again - i don't know if it makes sense from a promotional perspective for music, but my gut feeling definitely goes against it.
SL is full of people trying to sell stuff and nobody buying.

I wouldn't bother it's a joke.

It's easy to set up live shoutcast streams in second life. it would be quite possible to have a virtual em411 with live streaming dj's sets and or live sets, workshops etc... think of second life as just a huge chatroom which is represented in 3D.

It's teh future of internets.

ugh. so depressing. I wish you luck though. Hell, if it's a way to connect to an audience, great. But it's strange and depressing.

lol @ all the em411 ludites

I wouldn't call us ludites, per se.... It's just that, if something like SL *is* TEH FUTURES, it's got a looooong way to go. There really is no reason to go there other than to... go there. Any music, products, ideas, etc ,can all be found virtually without having to drive a badly drawn avatar around a badly rendered 3D world while pretending to be someone else.

If the entire internet was a 3D environment (which I assume it may one day be, ala Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash), then representing yourself in said environment would be just part of being in the environment, ie "online".

But as it stands, it seems like a waste of time and resources to basically represent yourself (your company) in basically a chatroom that got drunk and had cyber-babies with The Sims. It's just a game, at this point.

I think it's a good idea to consider these sorts of options, and shows how you are on top of your game, like with the hardware you've been selling. I just personally think SL is kind of a joke... at this point in time.

like I was SAYING, it's really all about VLB!!! I can't beleive nobody is even talking about it... remember---cradle to grave!
