--> After pursuing a slot at two of the bigger electronic music venues in town (an effort that ultimately proved fruitless), I am back to square one in trying to get my dear friend Coppe' out to Portland to play a wicked show.

Normally, I would devote this blog to talking shit about booking people, but seeing as how many of you have probably had similar experiences and thus may have read such a blog before, I will refrain from doing so.

So instead I am left wondering if anyone else has any suggestions. I think the only way to do this right now is to go the ol' DIY route, but I obviously don't have a sizable budget for a PA system, cost of renting a venue, promotional materials, not to mention paying the artist herself to come out here.... so maybe this is an impossibility.... BUT, if anyone has any ideas, feel free to throw 'em my way.

Thanks friends!

If I can play, I will bring my PA!

theres plenty bars, clubs, and venues here welcoming electronic music, things have been change here in st.louis. ever since the end of last year the place here are having more electronic music. things seem to be picking up a lot. this last month i've seen 3 shows and normally theres only a good artist every few months. if you come here let me know. i'll give you my number and we can play at some swanky place

strangus, i would take you up on your offer. except you apparently live in california. a bit of a drive up to portland, don't you think?

atum - if i ever go to st. louis in the foreseeable future, i will make sure to contact you.

No man, please reconsider. I love PDX, I have family there, it's one of my favorite cities, I plan on living there someday. My offer stands.
My Previous blog on PDX

like i said in my mail D - plan first, then get sponsors. NEA won't give funding for this kind of thing.

in fact, it's probably better to establish yourself first - start a small monthly event, build up a network of people and put on artists who aren't from too far afield. make some merchandising - stickers, t-shirts CDRs etc and start handing them out. when you've generated enough buzz after about 6 months then you can go looking for sponsors. the choice of venue is really important too - it's worth paying a little bit more for a place with a decent PA and competent sound person. i'd aim for somewhere about the same size as bul-let's.

get some sort of website up where people can post up pics/links to youtube videos that have been taken at previous events, start grabbing peoples phone numbers so you can alert them by twitter or something equally pointless and trendy ;). get a flickr group going, do street lives with a small PA and a generator, upload podcasts. basically, do anything and everything possible so then when you approach a possible sponsor you can reel of a list of webhits, gigabytes downloaded and typical attendance numbers at your events. peeps won't part with their cash if they think they won't see it again.

gambatte!

welllllll, I'm sure if you keep plugging away you'll find somewhere. I've been in this position before, but it all worked out. granted we lost a shit-ton of $$ and only 30 people showed up, but it was freekin' fun. Can I ask where what venues you tried? Bigger venues is probably not the best route (I tried that too.) That way if not a whole lot of folks show up, it doesn't seem deserted, just 'intimate' When when were you thinking about having this shin-dig? If you make it happen, I'll go!

have you tried holocene? they seem to be a good group of peeps. there are so many places that cater to electronic music. i know if you try for some of the larger clubs they are going to have a fuck you attitude. but what about rotture, holocene, someday lounge? i can try and get something at the fez but you have to expect what dequalsrxt said. you might not get the amount of people you are expecting. there are so many factors its best to expect nil. also alot of these places book 4 or more months in advance. unless you get some kind of group thing where you will attract lots of people its really tough to get a large turnout.

ivan is giving you good advice.

+ another vote for Holocene.
they are totally nice people. they are also friendly to the DIY approach... you can put on a show there and do all your own promoting and booking. you should get a good line up put together and then approach them with a 'prepackaged' show. They take a piece of the door to pay the sound guy and door person and you are good to go.
i'm not sure how Someday works. i've played there twice and it was arranged differently each time (as far as booking goes) I'm not sure how much promotion they do... so it would be up to you once again.

the one time I talked to holocene about getting something together they said that they're often booked up 4 months in advance, so that's a good suggestion if you got the time.

thanks for the suggestions. i have actually approached the people at both holocene and someday lounge in regard to coppe' playing a show, but they expressed very minimal interest... perhaps if i present them with something 'prepackaged' (like ivan and mapmap have suggested), they would be more inclined to accept.

if you put something together and handle all the details they will totally give you a night... it could me a shitty monday or something but if you come up with something decent people should come, right?
