I will never be inpressed by digital mash ups. Getting two files to play at the same time =boring. Mixing records is an art. Mixing files is a task. Sorry but it's true.
DJ Broken Window has one of the dopest mash up CDs (on violent turd) I've ever heard. It's has some of the most obscure accapellas I've ever heard mixed with instumentals I never knew existed. My point being I was really impressed and if the same thing came out today using all digital files I wouldn't even listen to it.
Why not? Because there is no sport in it. The Broken Window disc is a result of intense record collecting and skills on the decks-something you can't do overnight. The modern mash up is the result of spending an hour or two downloading free files and syncing them in Ableton or whatever. BORING! Any 13 year old with internet access can do that. Again I'm talking about a propper mash up -an instrumental with an accapella over it- not an artist like J Chot taking liberties with digital files-now I want to hear that!
Obviously I'm a vinyl purist and that's just too bad for me since no one really cares anymore but I remember the day when I finally found the Yes-leave it accapella. I was so happy because I had been looking for it forever it seemed and my fellow DJs were all kinds of jealous! You just can't have that experience with mp3 or digital files.
