So I'm getting paid a little extra for doing a bunch of overtime last week,
and I was thinking it would be fun to spend say $100 or $200 on buying an entire cheapass production setup, and seeing what I can produce with it. . . If I bought it all 2nd hand, I could always just sell it for whatever I paid (mostly anyway)
Then I thought. well you know.. maybe there are some other people out there, with a hundred or so spare. . or maybe less even? that would be interested in having like. . a production competition. where you can only use what you bought, and have to produce an EP or something over a short(ish - month or two? time to learn the gear etc..) period of time.
I dont know, can anyone afford such things? or would anyone be bothered enough to leave their computers, thousand dollar synths, etc etc alone for a while?
There was a thread over on livePA about such things recently but it basically deteriorated into 'you cant make good music unless you spend shitloads of money'...

the $$ limit can be decided upon later, but I think the less it is.. the more people would enter, and the more interesting the results would be (to a certain extent anyway)
the rules would be something like, no using anything you own at the moment - including computers. so youd have to buy your computer if you wanted to use software. the exception to this being, you can digitize the master tracks in order to upload them (no intentional qualitative processing during this process though)
some kind of prize would be provided,
of equal shitness to the gear used in the competition... may or may not have monetary value or practical use.
If nobody wants to waste a bit of money (or at least 'invest it' for a month or two.. - who knows if you bought well you could even make a profit), perhaps I'll still blog my own exploration of cheapnesses.
The way I see it is, it forces you out of your comfort zone, and to think in different ways about producing than normal . . which can produce different musical ideas to normal too.

im not really bothered being the first.
my setup is cheap ass production. i don't need to pretend ;-)!
how about still being able to use stuff you have, but you still need to justify the price. i.e. I bought this tape machine on ebay for $10 two years ago, plus this mic for $5 at a thrift store...
i second adc bicycle - i'd rather not purchase a second 4 track for $50, or various second hand instruments etc. love the idea of limiting ourselves to cheap tech.
what about just saying: no computers or digital gear at all? etc. cool idea OK..
so more of just a low-tech competition.. works for me, I still get to buy my cheapass studio. How will we limit what people can use? I think cheap digital gear will still need to be allowed how about, no single piece of gear can be worth more than $150 (100?), and you can only choose say 4 (?) pieces of gear. or something. thoughts? moondog trumps you all in the hobo music department.

I think it would be refreshing for everyone to put aside the computer completely as a tool... sure you can use it like a 4 track...only recording and mixing...no vst effects or instruments or automation... and see what happens....
