--> Im in the process of getting a Dave Smith MonoEvolver kb, and was comparing prices in my head and trying to decide which way to go.

A local music shop, which by the way is very cool and has been very helpful, has the mono evolver kb with tax for 1287.49. The benefit is I can pick it up and have them to go to if anything goes wrong.

Through Novamusik I can have the kb for 1199, free shipping no tax. So I can save a good $88 some odd dollars, but the question is should I spend the extra money simply out of loyalty to the local store and wanting to help them along?
Or should we just go for the best deal possible, I mean an extra $88 can go towards some other needed items. Is there a limit price wise in going local and then going to other stores?

i say support your locals, if it matters to you they are there. after all, $88 is not a big percentage of the price. plus it's handy to have a place to go nag if things go wrong.

if you've every had to return a broken item, you'll know paying less than 10% more is TOTALLY worth good customer service.

Returning broken gear by mail sucks. Especially if the online store tells you to try to recoup the costs from UPS. HAHAHAHAHAUGH

But, take the online printout to your local store and see if they can cut you a deal. Many retailers have wiggle room. They generally can't compete neck-and-neck with online retailers, but thats because stores have rent, knowledgeable employees, etc...

For instance, back in the day, I bought a Korg Trinity, and a few months later the OS had an irreversible system crash and woulnd't boot anymore.
I took it back, and Petosa music (Seattle WA) said "that sucks, here... have a new one. Can we help you with anything else?"

That was rad.

that 10% of the price rule is a good one. in germany we're however spoiled by thomann mailorder, which is not only cheaper than any local music store, but is also a "good" family run company that offers 3 years full warranty on _anything_ you buy from them (so no need for applecare etc).. they easily beat those 10% most of the time so I always shop there however here the "normal" music stores wouldn't stock a MEK in the first place. buy it from the shop!

yeah the only local music stores near me only deal in guitars. And in terms of customer service I have never ever been impressed. all I have in terms of keyboard options are places like Sam Ash or Guitar Center- and i'd sooner be loyal to them than I would be a car dealer.

But what you really need to ask yourself is:
a) how likely is this to go bad in the return period(if this is high then buy from local- but really don't buy at all!)
b)how likely is local retailer to just box it up and ship it to DaveSmith for warranty repairs.
c)how likely is local retailer going to be to appreciate that you paid more because you expected better service (you'd think that this is just good business, but music business is often NOT good business)
$88 is a lot of money...7% of the total cost of this item.

Most of the places I have dealt with would tell me to mail it out after 30 days and would be NO help. I've never been to a music store I thought I could take anything back to after the return period and get anything but hassles.
