awesome article.

...Moreover, the researchers found that much of the change between improvisation and memorization occurred in the prefrontal cortex, the region of the frontal lobe of the brain that helps us think and problem-solve and that provides a sense of self. Interestingly, the large portion responsible for monitoring one’s performance (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) shuts down completely during improvisation, while the much smaller, centrally located region at the foremost part of the brain (medial prefrontal cortex) increases in activity. The medial prefrontal cortex is involved in self-initiated thoughts and behaviors, and is very active when a person describes an event that has happened to him or makes up a story. The researchers explain that, just as over-thinking a jump shot can cause a basketball player to fall out of the zone and perform poorly, the suppression of inhibitory, self-monitoring brain mechanisms helps to promote the free flow of novel ideas and impulses. While this brain pattern is unusual, it resembles the pattern seen in people when they are dreaming....

this must be why so many musicians smoke pot...

I just saw Simon Shaheen play at the UW a few weeks ago. He did an absolutely stunning improvisation on an oud and it WASN'T FUCKING JAZZ. The name "Miles Davis" was never uttered. We did not talk about whether or not it was pretentious, or referential, or better than so and so.

I hate jazz because it starts stupid arguments. FUCK YOU MILES DAVIS. YOU RUINED THE INTERNET.

jazz was awesome when it didn't need an iron lung (universities) to survive."

I second the motion.

me and you can't be friends anymore umami....

Ouch dood. That hurts me right in the moobs.

I hate bebop, but for personal reasons.

Most of them are wannabe berklee grads.

Also, I had to play through two books of Charlie Parker Solo Transcriptions. I got pretty tired of bebop.

I still love the more impressionistic kinds of jazz (kind of blue era, Bill Evans, etc) tho.

NO

JAZZ IS KILLING THE INTERNET. KILLING IT.

it's the anti-google.

STOP THE JAZZ. Send in your Miles Davis CDs and we'll guarantee your internet safety!

Do I have to turn in my beret, turtleneck and shave my goatee?

i would advise anyone who thinks jazz is 'crap' to go see a live performance. it is musicianship in its most distilled form.

+1 dylan

skilled jazz musicians are a fucking knock-out in person

yeah, but THE INTERNET. THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

I'm glad I didn't go take any jazz classes or hang out with jazz people so that I don't understand how "important" Miles Davis is. because I really just like his shit for what it is. so simultaneously the cliche is lost on me and I don't feel the need to imitate it but in an oblique way - the aesthetics and the mood, not the particulars, not even the technique or the genre. plus all the fucking nerds argue about it so I also get the benefit of knowing on an intellectual level that it is "important" but not on a primal, penis-measuring level.
so yeah fuck the arguments. don't hate the player, hate the game!
