i'm quitting guitar for the 3rd time in a year. i'll probably end up quitting at least 45 more times.
i want to hear from some fellow habitual instrument quitters out there. what did you quit? how long did you try to persevere before you realized you were gonna fail, just like all those times before?
do you sell gear when you don't play it anymore? i can't stand the sight of it, sitting there in the corner taunting me. bastard.
i realize i'm just whining. but what's a pimp supposed to do? i got bills to pay and little pimps to feed. i can't be spendin' all my time learning scales and fugues and shit.
damn you cheap yamaha classical guitar! why can't i quit you? oh get your sexy ass over here!
*awkwardly hugs guitar*
it's gonna be okay. we're gonna be okay. i'll just play you on the weekends.
*sniffle*

Not sure if this counts or not, but I've quit DJ'ing on at least 6 different occasions. Usually they involved crappy promoters and not getting paid, seeing talentless losers get booked ahead of me, or some other instance of self pity. It never lasts very long, because I still love doing it, and that's what it's really all about.

don't give it up. i've heard lots of dudes say they play the violin or guitar and then it turns out they just scratch the strings and proccess it with a million delays. hearing years of smelly hippies playing xylophones through vocoders i feel the bar fo accomplishment is set very low.

Maby you should ask yourself why you wanted to play guitar to begin with? Trying to fill a hole or what.

i don't understand why u have to 'quit'. by quit do u mean, not allow yourself to play? Why not just leave ur guitar under your bed and not touch it until u really really want to.
also, when you are feeling like u can't come up with your own way (which may or may not be what you are having problems with).. it's a good time to do one of two things: a. shamelessly ripoff the technique/knowledge of guitarist that u think are good. b. spend time learning and practicing nitty gritty technical and theoretical stuff. the more of this stuff u learn the more doors will be open to you.
also u might try making up totally rediculous guitar shit that is intended to not add up to anything. that can be fun.

i quit guitar when i was 17.
heard my first bit of acid. looked at my guitar, and realized i could never go back to it again.

guys, this was not a very serious post. i'm happy to say it was just a fit of temporary insanity and my guitar and i have been happily reunited. i do need some new sheet music though to spice up the relationship a bit.
i'm just a habitual quitter, meaning i get frustrated and stop periodically and then pick back up, that's all. so it sounds like i'm maybe not the only one. we can't all be segovia clones (i hear he practiced 4-5 hours a day! wha?).
like i say in the original post - i'm sure i'll quit about 45 more times. that's just how it goes.
thanks for all the suggestions and input.

ps - what's your favorite online place to buy sheet music? i'd like to buy songs a la carte and download them and print them out - is there such a magnificent place?

I've given up the bassoon at least 45 times. Seriously, if I can't make a connection with an instrument I usually get rid of the thing. Best to stick with the stuff you know and love and loves you back in that gooey nauseating musical way. Although I think something can be said of continuing on with an instrument if you genuinely hate its guts. For instance, I'm fairly certain that Yngwie Malmsteen hates the guitar, that's why he makes it do those things. A genuine sadist. Hey it worked for Marquis de Sade, right?

hey, there is tons adn tons of free classical guitar music online if you look. You can find just about anything that isn't from the 20th century available, but you have to look hard sometimes. I used to have it all in digital format, but I Printed it all out and don't have it anymore. Is there anything specific you're looking for?

thanks, roshi. i'm currently looking for a service that allows a la carte ordering. like song by song, maybe buying pdf's or something, downloading them, and then printing them out. i've seen a couple sites that have similar functionality, but was not impressed with the selection. i'm betting it's a red tape nightmare to get music publishers to do that sort of thing.
ricemutt, i've got the classical stuff covered i guess. i'd just like to find some more current songs, but without buying the whole $20 beck or elliott smith or neil young songbook if all i want is 1 song, ya know?
lara - will do.
jdg, go bake something.
