--> I infrequently send material to webzines for review, either my own or a buried in time release. A review usually ebs forward and i get an email notification and something like "i hope you will find that the review has been performed in a fair and objective manner".

So far i haven't read a review that wasn't "objective" since it's really some person writing what he or she thinks. however, i still feel the people who usually write the reviews have no knowledge of electronic music and basically DONT KNOW WTF THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT and are biased towards one brand of music or another. Sometimes i'm pleasantly surprised though and someone reviews the release who at least has some appreciation for electronic music or at the very least some exposure to it. Rarer is the person who is used to listening to and hearing it in all it's forms.. you know.. the person who knows the difference between autechre and scorn and also knows the difference between ambient and drone and noise. or knows that electro-house is not electro.. it's house.

i know "writing about music = dancing about architecture" and honestly, writing reviews is pretty boring. i know. i did it for a while. trying to come up w/new ways to describe release after release is annoying but if you are going to do it then don't half ass it.

yeah.. im whining but more than that i'm fishing.. fishing for links to good webzines where the writers are not just friends of some guy w/a domain and html skills.

so, let's have it.. pitchfork, igloo etc i know those.. are there any others worth a poop?

from now on.. every time i think of sending out a release for review i'm going to pull out a bunch of nose hairs instead.

so do you just get reviewed by these magazines by sending your stuff in to them? I never really thought about how much free publicity one might gain by doing that...

sometimes they review it sometimes they don't. it's hard to get reviewed in print magazines sometimes.

?why the second pic in your blog??

and for that matter, why do you have a pic of me for your main blog image?

their's always room for phil collins... especially when it's some band's actual album cover.

I would like a music zine that isn't filled 50% with Philip Sherburne articles/reviews...

great list of magz, i know most of those but some i will check out!!
i agree the best thing about having a review is simply the exposure. it's the same reason i have albums "for sale" in itunes but have sold a grand total of one track... i'm more interested in the exposure.

though i've found getting reviews can be difficult, i'm not exactly sure why. probably for reasons mentioned above. maybe because review outlets are like labels and would rather play it safe with music they CAN describe with what my college theory prof used to call "music appreciation words". ;)

on the one hand, i have sent out links and requests for reviews and/or feedback to dozens of outlets, and gotten low response or reviews.

on the other, the reviews that HAVE surfaced have been random people i don't even know that have discovered the music on their own and contacted me with a review they wrote. one time this happened with Grooves, another time recently on Tokafi.

i keep on keeping on tho, someday one of them HAS to review SOMETHING, right? ;)

earplug and resident advisor are really tops for this stuff right now.

ha! i just noticed carlo listed the same two.
