--> It's been well over a year since I've created anything worthwhile and its pretty frustrating. I have been messing with some daft punk / kanye samples since forever with no success. Everything seems to suck dearly. I picked up another hobby (photography) months ago to clear my mind but that didn't work for my creativity. I think I should throw in the towel on this music pastime!

Try a Mixit.

link

rid yourself of those daft punk and kanye tendencies, what's wrong with you?

I'm sorry, but I really love that song. you know when you think a song is cool, and someone remakes it and its cool too and then you find samples online and you think "... I can make this track even cooler!"

It sounds like you're trying to force your creativity. At least that's the impression I got.

maybe try not to be results/goal oriented. That's such a problem with people, they focus too much on outcomes & not on doing. Stick at it

yeah, mixit!! *he says knowing full well he has fallen woefully short of the mixit mark of late*

my last dry spell was almost 2 years long. I too spent downtime picking up photography and got a lot of satisfaction out of it, however I got tired of it like I do everything else and eventually started playing with sounds again. Don't get too depressed over it, you may find it again one day without warning.

Maybe you were just being free with words, but if you really think of it as just a 'pastime', like playing solitaire or something, then don't feel obliged to continue. I don't mean to be rude, it's not a reflection on the quality of your work in any way.
But I suspect that since you turned to photography and not playing the stockmarket, that you have a creative impulse, and that can't actually be quashed. In fact I'd say your dissatisfaction with your output means that you really are striving to express something. As codeineparty says, don't force it! (oops I guess he didn't actually advise that, but I will). It will work its way out somehow, trust. Maybe it will be in the form of a drawing on a napkin, but you won't know until it does, and if you rule out music as an option, you are narrowing the field of possibilities.
Sorry, longer than I meant to go on...
wasn't there just some blog about 'quitting' recently?

drink fish oil it will balance your mind
what are you trying to accomplish? what type of music are you trying to make? ....or an even better question is: Did you just get interested in making music a year ago?

If you only started a year ago, you have not put enough time into figuring out what you are doing...believe me. I have been interested in making my own music for only about 10 years. I say only, because I have only scratched the surface as far as where I want to be. I have been through some depressing times and convinced myself that music wasn't as interesting as playing video games. I even gave up on music for more than a year at one time. A big mistake that I wish I could take back.

Maybe take a break from hammering at those same samples you've got there. I used to find it hard to sample things that I really loved. Nothing felt right, because it didn't do the original justice...ever.

If photography is what you want to do great! Do it!... but first figure out if it just a fun distraction to avoid a frustrating situation. If you are music, don't stop. you will regret it.

+1 for atum's comment, it's true.

just take a break, and force yourself to listen to diff music.

i have been contemplating the same thing lately. i started working on some ambient/sonic compositions, very simple things that i plan on making tiny cdrs with minimal packaging and leaving at music stores for free. just for kicks. the idea of it all seemed to help me not want to 'throw in the towel'. also summer is coming up and i am getting the cabin fever and i really don't want to be stuck inside looking at a screen. time to get out and do some stuff. these feelings aren't helping me accomplish my audio goals. bt maybe the wind in my face riding a bike will inspire me to make some more sounds.

dondoit.

yeah stop it and you'll return harder better faster stronger n longer.

can i have your stuff?

you can only quit if you're gonna mail your stuff to me.
