--> You know those dreams you have sometimes that are like a big, epic, dramatic film? The ones where you wake up with the feeling that that dream was really "important?"
I have those every night now since I've started taking melatonin. Apparently there's a lot of data out there to testify that it's good for you, too.
Last night I walked out side in the rain and their were two bears shooting fireballs and lighting at king kong(who was rapping in a screwed voice "you can hear me fo ya see me I got king kongs in da trunk") The bears merged together to make a fetus in a womb and rolled toward King Kong. I grabbed my umbrella- it was blue and bent over funny like a helmet. It was making a square wave vibrato sound. I picked it up and underneath it screamed a big voice(the voice of the Mysterons) that said OPEN A BUSINESS as it picked me up and flung me up in the air to take me and show me a mall shop with a happy baker working in his own business.
And thats pretty much every night for the last 2 months. I typically remember them, and they have never been nightmares. It's totally awesome- you need some.

just sell bisquets and sawmill gravy.

if you do it right, they will line up in droves....

L-tryptophan + melatonin + gingko = lots of those dreams on the regular.

Dave, you might already have competition here: link

Although I hear they don't do true southern biscuits.

oh man- fried chicken with bacon, cheese, eggs, and gravy for only $8. If that place was down here it would be THE recovery breakfast for the east bay, and it would be around $15. You flannel wearin hippies have it too good.

i've done the gingko nut thing. Anecdotally, it seems to keep me awake a little more. But on some days, in the afternoons, i get really sleepy.

I tried some last night. I dreamt that I was in a hospital and there was blood all over the place in the hallways. the staff was freaking out trying to clean it up. something really bad had happened, obviously. I met up with Whoopi Goldberg who was running towards me, telling me to open up the double doors in front of me. I opened them up and a bunch of kids ran toward us, screaming. Whoopi snuck into a nearby doorway and I reflexively hid under a desk. the kids ran past us. behind them was pedo bear from 4chan who apparently had caused all the destruction. I peered out from under the desk so that he couldn't see me. Whoopi also poked her head out from the doorway. after the kids ran through another double doorway, he stopped, hesitated, and looked around. he turned around and Whoopi darted back. I woke up, feeling that at this point I could have gone lucid and confronted pedo bear.

in conclusion, melatonin makes you dream about bears.

AWESOME!
Do you feel smarter now? I feel somehow like my short term memory is better and I understand myself better by remembering the things that fire randomly in my dreams.
Now what I DON"T understand is how these dreams are so structured and story-like. My dreams before melatonin just felt like random blobs of memory firing off with no rhyme or time perception.
But the dreams we're talking about go like "First this that and the other, so then blah blah, finally etc etc."
Like last night I dreamed that there was some sort of nasty demon alien man about a foot tall who was trying to claw through the wall near my furnace. He was really making a racket, and there was blood running down the wall. I can distinctly remember saying to myself "this is getting ugly, I'd better wake up." And that was the end.
So this makes me wonder, do we have dreams with story structure because we've been exposed to it over and over, or is story structure an innate concept in humans?

and jogn I just noticed you said something about gingko nuts. Did you actually eat one? Cause they smell worse than anything I have ever smelled before.
that's totally true, there's definitely a clear narrative to things as if I was watching them in real life. I took some on Friday too, actually, but I think because I went to bed so late I didn't really remember much. going to sleep I was thinking of really strange things. there seems to be an aesthetic to this substance... sorta reminds me of Wonder Showzen or watching Sesame Street while really drowsy - weird light, I guess.

from what I read on Erowid and whatnot, it seems that people have the most success with a combination of melatonin, valerian root, and B6 to induce lucid/weird dreaming. typical doses are 3mg-6mg. I took 5mg on Friday and 10mg last night (which supposedly is the maximum effective dosage before the brain stops absorbing it, and starts storing it elsewhere) and both nights I took a B complex just before bed. I have been taking those for a while, actually, but usually in the morning - they also taste kind of good, btw, if you like marmite/vegemite/cheerios. I'm going to see if I can find some valerian root today when I go to the health food store to buy another bag of guayaki.

I DO feel smarter, and more able to remember details, but in a more visuo-spatial way. in addition to dream recall, I am remembering imagined melodies a lot better and more conscious of sounds I hear in every day life (beeping checkout stands, squeaky wheels, dogs barking) that have melodic properties. which is GREAT. I also feel more conscious of melodic structure, variating individual notes' pitches and rhythmic positions. that could be more related to the fact that I've recently got in the habit of carrying around a portable recorder, but I did feel a sharp boost in this yesterday.

supposedly there are some weird side effects related to verbal and social interaction. I'm pretty verbally awkward anyway so I haven't really noticed. if anything I felt friendlier than usual yesterday, less self-conscious. oh yeah and the "hangover" side effects, kind of a very slight headache and a general light-headedness which is almost pleasurable. I think I'll probably keep this to a weekend thing.

delta - I had the "this is getting ugly" feeling yesterday when I woke up after pedo bear turned around. definitely a deliberate waking. I looked at the clock when I woke up and it said 5:15 which is around the time when I normally wake up - I went to bed at midnight which is really late for me. when I woke up again it was 8:30.

I've heard that Keith Richards wrote "Satisfaction" after hearing it in a very vivid dream. It woke him up in the middle of the night. When he got up in the morning, he was like "oh, yeah, THAT thing!"

Issac Newton would supposedly solve logic problems in this manner:

He would sit in a wooden chair, a metal bowl placed to the side, near his arm.
Holding an apple in his hand and relaxing, he would drift off to sleep.
His hand would relax, dropping the apple into the bucket and causing him to quickly wake up.

He often found that he had a suitable outcome in his waking mind using this exercise.
I wasn't there, so I cannot say if this is true, but it is whimsical to imagine.

I've read that 5-Htp is a very close molecular relative of LSD.
I too have expereinced very vivid, complex dreams while taking it, but I never found that it make me "relaxed" in waking life. It's made from Griffonia Berries(?) that simulate the effect of Tryptophan (banned in the 80's by the hysterical FDA, due to a contamination that had nothing to to with the intended content)but maybe someone's already pointed this out...

B12 does cause complex, dreams that I can scarcely remember. They seem more "watercolor" in their vividness. My best experience with it was in a semi lucid state where my internal field of vision was awash with swirling color and light, all pinks and oranges. It seemed my brain was swimming in this waterfall of warm color and pleasant humming, vibration. Surely that process happens often and I'm usually unconscious for it. It'd be nice if we could expereince this regularly, sort of like a brain massage.

Be careful with the Melatonin.

This is a great blog, thanks for writing it. I need to start keeping the dream journal again.

Apparently(not a doctor) B6 helps the body metabolize melatonin.
But I don't know if taking different things can produce any different type of dream- with no external stimulus, everything you dream is something that was already there.
I read up on 5-htp a little- it sounds interesting, but there's not a lot of research on it. It's a shame how there's not much research on these simple things that can't be patented...

i had a bunch of gingko nuts that is usually cooked with birds nest and other such concoctions, and no they don't smell. The others are pills. i've tried 2 different brands, those have a slightly strange smell to them, but hey as long as they're not lamb placenta i'm fine.

i want to try this stuff! found somewhere in the u.k selling it - link

which are the best ones to get? they got 1, 3 and 5 mg capsules, also liquid drops.

I take 5mg 20 minutes before bed. You'll want to take it a little bit before bed, and then go to bed when your body is already metabolizing it. You also prevent the hangover feeling a little bit if you take it in advance. If you sleep less than 6-8hrs you still feel the effects when you wake, and it's frustrating.
I starting taking the stuff because I was having sleep problems, btw. It was absolutely wonderful at fixing those.
I grabbed some 5-HTP today just to see what I think. I'll let you know!

I read it's supposed to enhance synaptic transmission, which might reinforce the possibility that they are not making the dreams more vivid, but simply allow you to remember them moreso.
If Melatonin is just what is produced/inhibited to stimulate a regular sleep/wake cycle, and dietary supplements improve this process, then we are likely starving ourselves of yet another natural chemical process by living a domesticated life. I don't recall having more vivid dreams on week-long Boy Scout campouts as a youth though. Maybe I'm just weird. This has got me curious too now.
