Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have been taking turns giving the music industry the finger. The British band made headlines last October for releasing In Rainbows without the support (read: control) of a record label, and Trent Reznor's group followed suit with last month's Ghosts I-IV.

I think the advent of things like half.com and ebay have gone a long way in making the public realize they have been getting ripped off by the majors. I know it helped me realize it. I buy a CD new for $15 and a few years later you can't sell it for even 75 cents. Why? Because they made like 8 million of them. So you got to the point where people put their CDs on their computers now and when you turn around to sell the disc maybe you're oh dear I've been had. And of course tastes is music change as we get older so it's just a loss-loss all around. I have spent a lot (and I mean a lot) of money on CDs and vinyl that have not stayed timeless and I have sold what I could it it made sense or I have donated for the tax write-off, or just given away to younger people in my family. But I don't buy major released any more unless it's from a select few bands I really care about or that I know have really good stuff. I think the record companies have finally understood that the game is over and so now they are trying to make little bits of money here and there from a variety of different sources and media (phone rings, etc.). But yeah, I ain't following. I think at this point paying $100 or whatever and $7 a month for satellite radio is a much better move than buying CDs every week or month. I can't wait until the XM/Sirius stuff is sorted so I can get a player that plays them both and hear all the great music that's out there and within easy reach.

the problem with this whole free album thing/ make money on tour is that touring is not financially sustainable in the long run. all this means is that when you go see radiohead or nin, they will charge you significantly more for a ticket since their travel costs are likely to skyrocket as the cost of energy increases. what we are likely to see in our lifetime, at least in the US and probably mainland Europe, is the development of more popular local and regional music scenes, simply for logistical reasons. you may get their album for free now, but the ticket to the show will cost you 20% more every time they come through town, which is quite shitty for their fans.
i have issues with paying more than $25 to see anyone play except for reanimated jimi hendrix, and i'm still waiting for science to deliver on that one.

good points about touring costs highdroppod. imagine the transport costs of a show like NIN. that's a whole lotta gear to be hauling around. i guess this is where the whole offsetting carbon footprints comes in? i can feel the profit margins shrinking already.

at the end of the day:
radiohead is just a band
trent reznor is just a dude
there is nothing innovative about the music industry anymore.
media is a big wash of novelty

they will try eventually, and get something like a whiter lenny kravitz. he'll do great and be elevated to the status of jesus, eventually being executed by the chinese world government. by that time, everyone will have forgotten about the original jimi hendrix, that he was black, that he played the guitar.

So rich bands do what me and you have done forever.
Ok.. so I know that Trent Reznor is NIN and those ugly dudes are Radiohead.. so who is "the record industry"
And can they tell me who the "they" are that are consistently the culprits of world domination schemes

the rosicrucians, the knights templar, the bilderbergers, the trilateral commission, the white jimi hendrix, skull and bones, montauk, haarp, the large hardon collider, thurm and taxis.

if you discount the energy crisis, i don't see how touring will affect these big cats any more significantly than getting older. Ticket prices will just rise to cover for inflation. The touring thing on the other hand is not feasible for a lot of folks that are quite a lot less bigger than NIN and radiohead.

I had an epiphany about making money from music the other day.
Basically: the model we are used to has been in existence for a relatively short amount of time (I'm talking about the promoters, or music industry, control all aspects of ownership and choosing a minority of entertainers to become massively popular).
So what did we have before? I guess it was the 'street' performer with a hat out at the end of the show (think paypal donations), or being payed for a performance, or having a patron support your non-commercial music. Is this still viable today?
There are parallels with online comic creators; they draw their comics (quite often daily) and post them on the intahweb for nothing!! They have a donation button on the site and come out with a book every now and then. oh, and they tour comic conventions. They seem to be supporting themselves, or at least their ability to create more comics.
I'm willing to look into this model, but the one thing that the music industry does give you (the value add), that is difficult to break through is the promotion aspect. It seems to be difficult to get a new act recognized amongst all the music that is out there, does anybody know the best way to promote yourself online?
