I own hardware/software for gameboy, gameboy advance, DS, Palm PDA, PSP and GP32. I used to own a GP2X but sold it and got my PSP instead.

I've used much/most of the music software available for these devices and I can wholeheartedly recommend getting yourself a cheap palm device (i use a tapwave zodiac 2) and running bhajis loops. because its a PDA app its touchscreen, so quick to use. its also probably the most full-spec'd handheld music app i've used and you can pass midi files/wavs to/from your computer via SD card or usb link.

The Yamaha SU-10 is a blast/laugh if you have something to sequence it with (the "scratch" effect and "filter" are worth the price of admission). I bought mine because I wanted to be Atari Teenage Riot, lol...

Did anyone mention the Korg Mini Kaoss Pad? Seems like a no brainier in any battery powered setup.

Korg Kaossilator
Zoom MRT-3
Boss DR-202
Alesis Micron?
Akai XR20
Alesis SR18

+1 for SP-404 I love mine. Just, sample 10 seconds randomly and go from there.
+1 for Nitrotracker, hours of fun. Before I sold my DS I was never without this one.

I've been getting into these small portable devices myself lately.

I'll add my vote for Bhajis Loops. I bought a T3 just to run it and it was worth it. As KidQ says, good integration with your computer setup. For versatiliy and functionality, it can't be beat. Although, of course there are lots of other apps you can run on a Palm, so there could be a distraction factor if you suffer from such things (I do!)

My latest buy is a Korg PXR4, which is a little 2 AA powered 4-track that uses SM cards. Built-in mic, good real-time tweakable effects, USB for transfer. It's excellent and my latest favourite thing.

I have a Korg ES-1 and I've heard about people rigging up 9V batteries to the Electribes for portable power. Haven't tried it myself though. Anyone else?

Had a QY70 some years ago. I'm on the lookout for another now. It was ace. 6 AAs though. Ouch!

My DS is sitting around waitng for DS10 to be installed into it! Nitrotracker is good, but seemed to freeze up quite a bit on me. Potential distraction factor creeping in here too.

also can you recommend a palm unit with an SD slot that runs off AAs, is good for bhajis and is fairly cheap (whoa, pretty tall order there)?"

Bhajis Loops has a pretty decent wave editor within it, i've never needed anything else so i'm not sure about other apps.

as for the palm recommendation: no Palm runs on AAs, they all have their own batteries. you could probably make a battery pack to plug into the palm's charge line if you wanted. as for SD, all the Bhajis Loops-capable Palms will have SD slots

i recommend getting a T3 - they're quite cheap on eBay and run Bhajis perfectly. also, i have found the T3 has the best sound quality. their battery is replaceable and there's higher density replacements which will ensure better battery-life. I use a TX and a T3 (both bought solely for Bhajis!) and i think the T3, despite being an earlier model, runs Bhajis better than the TX

good to see other Bhajis fans on here too : )

boss sp-404 is battery powered.. you can save sequences on it as well.. the 2g flash cards lots of sample time.. bad part is that the pads are not velocity sensitive..

somewhere i read about people making an ea-1 or er-1 battery powered.. they modded it so that it could use a recharable battery pack..

everyone always hating on the 505.. i <3 my 505... even if ricemutt says all its good for is a stand for his macbook >

don't forget about a battery powered mixer link

lol, well i was seriously joking, jokingly serious. what about a small 12" laptop running MilkyTracker?

A lot of my equipment uses batteries and is fairly inexpensive.

I love my kaossilator. You can't save loops on it, but if you couple it with an H2, you can have hours of mobile recording.

I also have an SP-404, but I don't usually use it as a stand-alone unit. Maybe I should start.

ooh ,,, I just got a PSP. Can it output MIDI ??

Don't forget a portable turntable...

I just remembered hearing about Madlib using one paired with a Boss SP-303 to sample /produce on the go.

Another battery powered mixer:

Another battery powered Edirol! This one, oddly, even has digital outs:
