the warpage
so jukka asked me about making uk bassline sounds. namely the "warpage".
i have taught countless kids how to make this sound. they call it the "warp"
or "warpage" cos of the wa-wa sound you get. this off beat sound - usually placed
on the 3 of the beat gives you the nice rounded bass line that the niche crew
love. its also a great indicator when your riding bike to get the fuck out of the
way cos when you hear this sound you know the kid driving has no license, insurance,
and is probably high.
its all about the filter envelope in this. i use subtractor in this example
but any synth with square waves and a filter envelope will do.
use two square waves. same tuninig. fairly low. you can try one an octave out
with another but i prefer two the same octave then pitch the whole thing out together.
set the cut off about 1 quarter down, res at zero.
then filter env attack at 1 quarter with amount to full.
amp env should be fast attack and not too much decay - the bass
has to be hard and tight for this type of music.
make a pattern with all the notes on every third semi quaver
so its like kick - w - kick -w
you should be getting the w-w-w- sound now.
now use the lfo to modulate the cutoff. i like weird timings so 6/4 or somethings
you are gonna mess with them. also try modulating the filter with you mod wheel to spice
up you pattern.
don't forget to punch the osc's up an octave for the breakdown.
this music is getting big in the uk check out T2 and all the niche stuff
for the sounds. i helped produce a couple of the bomb the b-lines series
which are pretty much the definative compilations of this genre of northern
dance music.
rave on.
here is the combinator of it for you:

good to hear that people are listening to this kind of stuff on em411! FUCK AN IRONY!

I should mention that I am listening to a bunch of drop the lime, who has made himself the US embassador of this sound. The whole trouble and bass crew is worth making it out for if you are into this sound.
