--> Howzit. I'm looking for a way to transmit FM radio. I want to see what it's like listening to a CD playing in my room when I'm down the street.

Where can I order a starter kit that can broadcast about 5kms?

Come on, I know there are enthusiasts out there who wanna help a DIY electronics puppy like me out... ;)

think it would work around a house at least?

the problem with your idea... radios arent just FM transmiters.. they have hugely complicated signal chains that modify the sound way before it ever hits an FM transmiter.. that is the sound you want to "hear thru" not the sound of FM transmition.

so without all that pre-transmitter stuff it'll just sound a little quieter, signal won't be as strong... am i correct?

and wont sound f'd up.

having been lucky enuf to hear songs i've mastered on the local radio, i know it sounds weird... esp the phase.

FM drops to mono quickly as the signal weakens..

oops..
... but again, this is USA radio.
every station is different

I used to work at a community radio station with a low power (100 watt) fm transmitter.

The bare minimum requirements for about 5km would be:

1) around 100w transmitter
2) an antenna placed something like 20-30 meters up above the ground

You can get startup kits at places like Broadcast Electronics for around $3500 that will meet those needs. Look at the LP100 package on the page from the link.

We started out with something like that, a CD player, and a deal with a local radio tower that let us mount our antenna. We also had a monitor to track and record our signal levels, since US law required it for our license. No other audio or signal processing. It didn't sound great, but you could play music and people could listen.
