There have been many fave this, fave that blogs lately. Lets take it further.
Name your (no more than) five absolutely favorite songs of all time. I'm talking songs that are fundamentally, archetypally connected to your soul. Songs that you never, ever tire of hearing. Songs that make you cry, or shake your ass, or piss you off in that righteous sort of way every single time you hear it. Songs that other people can cover and you still feel that tug. Dig deep. There is no shame here.
Finally, to hell with lists. Say something real about these songs and where / how they get you.
Mine.
1. Depeche Mode. Stripped. This song, for me, is the perfect dark techno-pop song. The sounds are clever, the arrangement is very effective, and melodically it is a punch to the gut. Every time that big old string pad kicks in, I am toast. I love this song to death, and I love every cover version of it, including that recent sort of popular cover by Shiny Toy Guns.
2. The Cure. Sinking. There are so many Cure songs milling about in my subconscious, in particular this one, A Forest, and To Wish Impossible Things. However, this is the first of their songs that I heard that tapped into the sort of desperate emotional vibe that they would gratuitously, wonderfully exploit on Disintegration later on. The simple little piano riff kills me.
3. Bjork. All is Full of Love. Specifically, the Funkstorung remix that features in Chris Cunningham's video. A perfect, gorgeous song. The sounds, songwriting, and more than anything, her performance are terribly moving to me.
4. Slowdive. Dagger. So much of Slowdive's canon is huge and dripping the sort of miserable sentiment that I get off on, I'm not sure what it is about this tiny song that hits me. Contrast? Its sparseness in context of their other work? However, it moves me just as much out of context. I just know that it is a very simple little gem of a song, and it works because of it.
5. Skinny Puppy. Worlock. Oh man, that vocoder. Damn.
Hm, with the possible exception of the bjork track, no IDM or contemporary electronic peoples.
Also, due to popular request: please recount your five favorite jerkoffs -- identify the location, duration, and time of day.

Luke Vibert is one of my long standing favorites. Doesn't really pull soul strings, but certainly makes me move. µ-Ziq is also a long standing favorite. Yesterday we were grilling on the lawn, rotating who picks music, and on my third go, Meast made an appearance. Jackal is a sweet track. As far as things that I never tire of, again, Boards of Canada.
I asked friends about this thread, and most everyone identifies with lyrical work. Most of my friends had Smashing Pumpkins, Joy Division, Radiohead, and Elliot Smith in their top five. When I do identify with lyrical work, it is usually disjointed or nonsensical. Beck was great with this on Odelay. Joanna Newsom is fucking hot, both in her person and her songs. The imagery is so strange and strong. Neutral Milk Hotel follows the someone nonsense or disjointed lyrical styling. I definitely prefer leaving lyrics open to interpretation. I suppose that is why I prefer instrumental music.
I find it interesting that people tend to relate to songs with lyrics. Listening to Lunatic Harness (which I've had to buy three times...) will always throw me right back into the Aerostar I first drove while moving out of my parents house. Capitol K's Island Row will always remind me of driving my Honda Accord '87 hatchback down winding roads the day I got it. I can smell it. Talk Show Host by Radiohead reminds me of nothing in particular, aside from feeling like a badass. Any Nine Inch Nails song will remind me of nothing too specific. Windowlicker will always remind me of when I got the VHS and we watched the video on the brown carpet in my living room, which is no longer there... So for me, the non-lyrical, or nonsense lyric, is far more string pulling.

Nocturne Opus 48 #1 by Chopin - The most emotional piano piece ever composed, to me. I am completely euphoric while it plays, as it covers the entire range of musical feeling. The Ivan Moravec performance is stunning.
2nd movement of Symphony #9 by Beethoven - I pretty much have the same reaction as Alex Delarge. The 9 Beet Stretch version of this becomes some kind of inescapable epic poem of disparity and vulnerability.
Roygbiv by BoC - that SH101 bassline, lyrical lead, those layers of lovely chords and the headbop beat get me every time. Love all 2 1/2 minutes of it!
Choronzon by Tangerine Dream - The Analogue Rock anthem. The whole Exit album really, is timeless and their best work.
Concertina by Tori Amos - Can't say why, but I just love this song. Her voice, the way it was recorded, the Solina strings, everything.

frnortnr: he actually has put out more stuff - specifically the Rktik single on Arcola and the Brothomstrain/Blamstates single on Narita - and it's all really, really good (omg: "Rktik", "Matala Bobo", and "Ketku9000") as is to be expected but there's something special IMHO about albums, and I think if Lassi were to take a second crack at it he would really excel. I think Claro was friggin brilliant but flawed, and the flaws are of the sort that I think he could easily sort out given his output, albeit scant, since.
COME BACK LASSI

New day new list!
1. Zurich is Stained - Pavement (Slanted and Enchanted) Well, I new this just fantastic, awesome girl from Zurich when I was 17. I should find her. I guess I could switch this one with Summer Babe too.
2. Block - JPSE (Breath EP) I like the version from the EP better than the Bleeding Star album because of the great buzzing guitar ending. Those NZers sure can make a guitar tone. And good harmony.
3. Psychosomatica - Bedhead (Transaction De Novo) This one is cool because so many of their other songs are so slow, in a good way, but this has so much energy comparatively. Still gives me chills. Nice crunching guitars and smooth vocals.
4. Svefn-g-englar - Sigur Ros (Agaetis Byrjun) For some reason, whenever I have time to kill at an airport I put this song on pretty loud and walk really, really slowly through the airport. I become completely separated from the rest of the people as they blur by me. I've never been able to feel that way any other time.
5. Wave - The Stereo Bus (Hey Thank You) Just a lovely pop song I guess, and like JPSE, great guitar tone. Reminds me of being in Taranaki for Christmas, ie, best time of my life so far.
