When i was in Hanoi (I was a a Microsoft Innovative Teaching Conference) I had an afternoon off and thought I'd go for a walk. Headed out by myself and before long found a little temple (see the picture)
There was drum music coming from inside so I stopped and decided to have a listen. Got out mp3 player and started to record it. Then a woman came out and invited me inside.
I wandered in and the lady got me a chair. then someone handed me some money and a packet of cigarettes. I guess every guest gets a gift.
Well it was great. There was singing and drumming and string music and a priest who was waving incense and there was a purple paper mache flying horse and people getting covered up in red satin and people changing the priest's robes and people taking photos and me sitting there thinking 'What the .........?" coz I usually get to go to fairly staid Baptist church services if I go at all and this is a long way from that. After a while I got up, put the money and the cigarettes on the chair, added some more money as a gift and quietly left.
Anyway, I asked one of the Vietnamese attendees to the conference what I'd been to and she told me that it sounded like a wedding. So there we were. I'd been to a wedding.
Here's a link to the recording I did:

you'll hear the drum music, then the woman asks me in and then more music
