--> Apologies, a completely non-music related post.

The creationist/ID friendly pseudo documentary called Expelled will be screening near you soon. In the film, Ben Stein claims that scientists critical of the theory of evolution are being silenced by the powers behind "big science". Through ham fisted montages the film also tries to establish a link between the theory of evolution and Nazism and other genocidal ideologies.

Christian fundamentalists are lobbying hard to promote this film, even offering incentives to school groups to go and see it.

A counter site has been launched by the national center for science education that lists, and refutes, the lies and important omissions of the expelled film.

Publishing hyperlinks to the expelled exposed site, using 'expelled' as the visible link text, will help make the counter site more visible in search engines, and help ensure that people really do hear 'both sides' of the story. If you can, please help out.

Here's a review of the film:

Digging this page will help spread the word too (there's a subtle digg link beneath this blog post)

edit: "help defend science" == shorthand for 'help protect people from being robbed of the chance to understand the scientific method, to understand the crucial importance of evidence based reason in evaluating truth claims, to understand the principles or critical thought, to appreciate the enormous weight of evidence in support of evolutionary theory.'

has all that stuff you said been helpful?

I don't think it's too difficult to see ID as stating a pretty obvious 'truth' (not 'Truth'), and this truth I can accept as by and large a useful definition of the way stuff is.

I don't understand why you're using the word 'true' here. The reason i said that this kind of equivocation is unhelpful is that you seem to be emptying the word 'true' of any useful meaning.

If you disagree, can you give an example of something that is 'untrue', in an equivalent sense to the way you're using the word 'true', here?

yes

that science is something other than a religion, is untrue.

the truth i mentioned is a lower-case t, for simple obvious truths and not universal scientificy Truths. Like, for instance, if I drop this rock it will accelerate towards the center of the earth at 9.8m/s/s. This is true, and I dont think its empty of any useful meaning. Of course, it is empty of any useful meaning if you wanna talk about Truth, but then you better be including reference frames and the speed of the observer, and perhaps his quantum entanglement to the observed.

Universal big T Truths are mythic.

Then you don't make sense what you say that geocentrism is true. Since you agree that the view that the earth is the center of the universe, in the sense that the theory talks about, is not a simple obvious truth. In fact it's demonstrably false.

mythic by definition is "Imaginary; fictitious." an is in no way an axiom

But Im not a scientist nor religious so what would I know?

Excellent point. And here's an big fat inescapable universal truth: existence exists.

unless it doesn't.
in which case, its true that no truths are Truths, but its not a Truth that no truths are Truths, ergo, the only Truths are lies.

The act of saying 'unless it doesn't', like any other act, presupposes that existence exists. Since at the very least that thought is a 'movement' of consciousness, which exists.

Or maybe you were joking ;) oh internets!

As Eddie Guerrero used to say (with more machismo than I)....

I LIED!!!!!

*fab fab* - here's a truth: you exist. you can try and deny it. i wouldn't try for any longer than is necessary tho. try it.

plz dont kill urself tho - i mean exist beyond ur physical body.

i would say that the 'truth' that ID the social phenomenon gives us is that humans want to see themselves at the center of things. This is what i take from ID, as a scientist.

can you flesh this out a bit? i'm not sure i follow.
