--> Apologies, a completely non-music related post.

The creationist/ID friendly pseudo documentary called Expelled will be screening near you soon. In the film, Ben Stein claims that scientists critical of the theory of evolution are being silenced by the powers behind "big science". Through ham fisted montages the film also tries to establish a link between the theory of evolution and Nazism and other genocidal ideologies.

Christian fundamentalists are lobbying hard to promote this film, even offering incentives to school groups to go and see it.

A counter site has been launched by the national center for science education that lists, and refutes, the lies and important omissions of the expelled film.

Publishing hyperlinks to the expelled exposed site, using 'expelled' as the visible link text, will help make the counter site more visible in search engines, and help ensure that people really do hear 'both sides' of the story. If you can, please help out.

Here's a review of the film:

Digging this page will help spread the word too (there's a subtle digg link beneath this blog post)

edit: "help defend science" == shorthand for 'help protect people from being robbed of the chance to understand the scientific method, to understand the crucial importance of evidence based reason in evaluating truth claims, to understand the principles or critical thought, to appreciate the enormous weight of evidence in support of evolutionary theory.'

oh my now this one is making me all going WTF iiiieeeekkk link

mlbot's a nazi, no spaghetti heaven for you!

Science very often has the huge flaw that it expects everything to be proveable, or logical. That this is simply not the case has been ignored by science in much the same way as science has been ignored by religions. It seems perfectly sane to me to assume the universe is nicely balanced, and so proveable stuff accounts for around half of whats out there. Scientists (and scientists who mistakenly call themselves atheists) argue and debate and build logical frameworks and ridicule anything outside of this proveable spehere. Look back through this (or any science vs religion debate to see what I mean). This is as closeminded as every other major religion.

Lets entertain an idea for a moment, that is that logic is just a subset of the universe. That it makes up only half of the story. This leaves plenty of room for god and mysteries and unexplainable, illogical and totally crazy stuff. Great. That sums up the universe I know nicely.

Science itself begins to support this idea also. My maths is not all that great so feel free to correct me if i stray, but doesn't Gödels theorem show that all logical systems are incomplete, and that there are propositions that are true and false, but demonstratably unproveable? Ie that there are True statements and that there are False statements, but that you can prove that a proof of these is not possible? Surely this is just another way of describing faith..

ie it is possible that a proof exists that shows 'God=True' cannot be proven

People, wake up! Don't you find it tiring to be ranting and ranting and ranting about proofs and logic to the exclusion of the obvious? Logic makes my teeth hurt.

OMG the bolivia bug

WTF

oh, and that god=false is also unprovable. You just gotta live with it

Yeah, who wants to watch that boring ass Ben Stein movie. Ben Stein lost all credibility with me when he was doing those Clear Eyes commercials.

IRON MAN is the movie to watch!!! I wanna see how science helps tony stark create that rad exo-skeleton!

yeah that is so cool because when evolution is in human---------#s am's hands, we are the real crationists. who neds god and the sense of univeersality?

Perhaps a better summary would be that logic is but one method to erase doubt in our perception of what is reality. Fear of the unknown is a natural occurrence that we are compelled to eradicate, by calling the conclusion truth. There are still many aspects that need no logic or rationale, yet can be understood and accepted, such as honor, responsibility for your actions, friendship, love and the appreciation of art.
I agree that an individual that does not appreciate the merits of both science and philosophy can be deemed a fool. What I don't like is a method of deriving truth from ancient dogmas with their roots in formed in superstition, fear, guilt and self-righteousness.

Well said RogerRoger! Take what you will from science and religion and make up your own mind about how you want to deal with death... although, with new scientific discoveries...we may never die.

i think we should all meet and punch each other, the first rule beeing not talk about it.

i cant believe u actually titled this blog "help defend science"

O.M.F. WHATEVER

dach wins.
