--> Has anybody seen this video yet: David Ford performing Go to Hell live in the studio?

David Ford's one of those guys that just blows my mind. This video was shot live in one continuous take. This ain't no pantomime.

Obviously, he's got someone triggering the looping for him so he can run from room to room here, but I've seen him do this onstage live all by himself and it was absolutely mesmerizing. Plus, it was a completely different arrangement, and it was only a couple of weeks before this video was done.

He's got an ear-piece in this to help him with syncing, but live he uses some sort of hardware based live looping thing without a metronome or anything. He just plays one part and loops that to use as the basis of his thing.

I'm going to see him again next month opening for Augustana and hopefully I can pick his brains a bit more about his gear.

So, if I were to try doing something similar but much humbler myself, where would I get started? I've got a fairly stable laptop with Ableton Live, but I'd need a new soundcard. I have Echo Indigo's I/O & DJ cards, but I'd need something that let me hear sync and allowed for 2 mono inputs (mic & gtr). Who's that beatbox guy who does it all with Live and some elaborate footswitch system?

Or are there hardware solutions that might be better?

What would you recommend for something like this?

On a side note, I saw a flamenco jazz guitarist (seriously) accompanying a singer yesterday, and he used a loop pedal to record his comping pattern for a whole chorus of a standard, and then he would solo over the big loop (sometimes close to a minute long at least). I found the style a little cheesy but the technology ingenious.

If the link above isn't working out for you, it's also on youtube: link

Thanks

neat!

"Who's that beatbox guy who does it all with Live and some elaborate footswitch system?"
kid beyond

You can do the thing where you start off loop recording at an arbitrary tempo in Ableton live by using augustus loop in it (thanks to roshi for uncovering that).

Jamie lidell has a live show based around a max recorder/looper patch he built. That's another way you could approach it, with the advantage that you can tailor it to exactly how you like to perform.

augustus loop - is that a VST?

link - found it. is it solid & reliable?

it's too bad when talented people ruin their music with bad lyrics.

don't know. Roshi might be able to vouch for it. I didn't use it much.

hardware wise digitech jamman is amazing.it has mic in and a seperate line in and has usb for putting your loops on your pooter.
software i'd say mobius link which is free and is like having 5 or 6 jammans synced to each other if you get a fcb1010 midi controller.

Live looping takes a lot of practice to sound good, it's not as easy as triggering scenes in Ableton.

I currently use a boss RC2 for my live looping, mostly because I don't sync the the computer. But I am getting better at Augustus. It's pretty darn stable.

I'm not quite a master at Augustus, it's a little quirky, but i'm getting used to it. Currently I trigger recording in augustus using a behringer fcb1010 - though if you were cheap you could make a cheap usb keyboard into a pedalboard by ripping out some of the keys.

Mapmap is the true master at Augustus, and the one to ask.
Sooperlooper is also supposed to be good, but I've never gotten around to using it.

Also, LOL

yes, roshi. i use sooperlooper and it's super stable and also the jam. i'm currently hosting it on AU Lab and haven't had any problems.

It's like an adventure game!

LOL @ adventure game.

Wow, oak, sooperlooper does look like the jam...just looked at its capabilities, esp like the 'multiply' function, which was something Fredo was trying to achieve with Augustus and couldn't do very easily.

The comments on setting it up in ableton are really confusing, though...anyone have better instructions?

Also, I answered my own question: link

i think he's gotta have a click in the ear.
