Has anybody seen this video yet: David Ford performing Go to Hell live in the studio?
David Ford's one of those guys that just blows my mind. This video was shot live in one continuous take. This ain't no pantomime.
Obviously, he's got someone triggering the looping for him so he can run from room to room here, but I've seen him do this onstage live all by himself and it was absolutely mesmerizing. Plus, it was a completely different arrangement, and it was only a couple of weeks before this video was done.
He's got an ear-piece in this to help him with syncing, but live he uses some sort of hardware based live looping thing without a metronome or anything. He just plays one part and loops that to use as the basis of his thing.
I'm going to see him again next month opening for Augustana and hopefully I can pick his brains a bit more about his gear.
So, if I were to try doing something similar but much humbler myself, where would I get started? I've got a fairly stable laptop with Ableton Live, but I'd need a new soundcard. I have Echo Indigo's I/O & DJ cards, but I'd need something that let me hear sync and allowed for 2 mono inputs (mic & gtr). Who's that beatbox guy who does it all with Live and some elaborate footswitch system?
Or are there hardware solutions that might be better?
What would you recommend for something like this?
On a side note, I saw a flamenco jazz guitarist (seriously) accompanying a singer yesterday, and he used a loop pedal to record his comping pattern for a whole chorus of a standard, and then he would solo over the big loop (sometimes close to a minute long at least). I found the style a little cheesy but the technology ingenious.
If the link above isn't working out for you, it's also on youtube: link
Thanks

it's not too hard, but you definitely need to get the "jack osx" insert program in order for the gui to work properly. it took me a minute of figuring out how to set it up, but once you get the settings right the first time it automatically does everything for you.
first download and install the jack osx thing (http://www.jackosx.com ) and then download the sooperlooper bundle (i use the AU version). if you're using AU, you need to also place the .app version in your applications folder (or wherever), since the au version isn't merged with the gui. when you start the au for the first time in whatever program you're using it'll ask you to find the .app, then it'll run off that. kinda weird and backwards, but once you do it the first time it's all good.

also, just watched this vid all the way through, and you could easily do this with a very simple pedal. i use a boss loopstation (rc-20, i think) and it could easily do this. you can find them used for not too bad.

yeah, agree with madeofoak... he's not shutting of any looped tracks individually... just layering them... a LINE6 dl4 would do the trick for sure. just shut off the record when you sing.

Yes, RC-20 and DL4 are both great loopers (my RC2 is basically the same as the RC-20, if you add an extra pedal). RC-50 is the mother, though, and has midi out to sync something, if that is important to you.

i think i'd want something more complex for what i want to do - i'd want to re-arrange the loops as i went, or keep a beat going but stop everything else so i could do a new set of chord changes. plus, i'd need something sophisticated at my feet, because i'd ideally be playing guitar at the same time.
David's definitely got a click in the ear for this video, but live his ears were absolutely naked. i was standing right up against the stage: look ma, no earpiece

ableton Live with sooperlooper seems to be flexible enough to do all of this - have beats and audio running in live, and sooperlooper synced to it.
I will post more about my experiments with sooperlooper once I get around to playing with it.

hey, kid beyond isn't totally from scratch: Video&feature=related
everytime he's starting something in the studio, you can hear a tk-tk-tk-tk loop already recorded, sort of like a closed hi-hat sound, to keep him synced. that might solve all.

LOL @ hedgehog
My way of linking to yt: I take the "www" out of the URL.
Everyone else does it by removing the "watch" part, which I don't understand.
