i went to mutek in 2004 and 2006. or was it 2005 and 2006? i can't remember. if you're into 'experimental' techno then mutek is a pretty cool festival. the spaces are usually done up with pretty nifty projections/installations. some of the 2006 nocturnes were in some pretty impressive industrial spaces.
i actually played an afternoon set at mutek 2007 streaming over the internet as part of the cafe electronika program.
i'm not going this year. mainly because i'm just feeling to old to party in huge clubs to techno until 4 am. but if you're up for it it's a good time. personally, i kind of feel a techno overload after a couple of days of it. its firmly rooted in techno and electronic music, perhaps too much so. maybe i'm just becoming an old man with more varied tastes.
another reason to go: montreal continues to effortlessly remain north america's coolest city (rioting hockey fans excepted...), imo.

I've gone in 06/07 and it's always been stimulating/fun for the most part. I think I might go partially this year.
minisystem's assessment of it is spot on, as in it's still very minimal techno centric, but it has seemed to branch out a bit. Going to every event for the whole duration can also drive most people crazy. I just looked at the program and the night of the 30th is the perfect place to start and is gone to be pretty cool and semi diverse (minus missing Christian Vogel and the Tim Hecker A/V Visions, but that just me.)
Overall it's really just an excellent excuse to visit Montreal (it's really is the coolest city in North America) and to live it up for a few days (as in stay up, be under the influence, eat good food, and occasionally catch a glimpse of some amazing music).
As far as places to stay, I'm still trying to figure that out. The last two times I've stayed in random hotels (for about $70 CAD if I remember), I don't think it gets a lot cheaper than that (besides some hostels), so your best bet is to find people to share a room with).

Thanks for the info.
I'm definitely aware of its minimal/techno focus, but at the moment I"m very much interested in that. I can see how going to every event over the whole festival could be a little much, though.

I am going to Mutek this year. I am looking forward to techno overload until 4am, as well as checking out Montreal itself.
