just wanted to blab a bit for anyone who cares and also for the chagrin of those who don't.
1. now i'm mixing movies! this is an insane amount of fun mixed with a jackhammer headache that increases in intensity until someone just plain gives up. part of the fun is that i get to work on a screaming quad intel mac with an HD3 protools system with 6 stinking dsps and an actual mixing console-in 5.1 to boot. raw. power.
i maxed out a session at some 180 tracks (with seemingly NO cap on how many verbs and eq's you can add). i am in love. and now, i've done everything you can do for film audio post except for walking foley and recording a live orchestra.
2. partly because of the strain of working more, and just because i've felt a little bottled up, i've started walking my dogs for an hour or so a day and writing a song each time. i thought this would be hard, but it's actually really comfortable. it takes maybe 15 minutes to clear the brain and find a decent idea, another 30 minutes to develop it, and then maybe the last 15 or so to clean it up and prepare for a quick little recording. i've made about 20 little song bits (including a few complete songs) in the past month (had to take off more than a week because of the new job, but i've adjusted again). about 4 or 5 of the songs are pretty cool i think. someday i'll have time to really record them.
i would suggest that everyone do this. it's the most focused study and best brain development thing i've ever done, not just restricted to music. i've even been able to approach some of my long term compositional goals this way.
that is all. i should be working or doing something besides writing this megalomaniacal blog, but it's been a long day.

haha hey! scott, I missed this blog somehow but I did the same thing a couple times recently... well tried. I know I always get my mind churning (usually in good ways) on my walks, so I thought maybe I should try my hand at some kind of conceptualisation while walking. It worked to a point, then I had the overwhelming urge to return (regress?) to my habitual songwriting methodology.
you're funny... I need to see your ass again. July is around the corner, and you're going to have to deal with me, james, and RT all at once!
