My thoughts:

This album is audaciously mopey.

There are many moments that impress me, mostly instrumental and production choices. They're not afraid to overdo it, and indulge themselves in some interestingly extreme effects and timbres. When the album soars, its when they really lay it on, piling on overdriven beats, overdriven bass, overdriven guitar, overdriven samples. Sense a theme?

So yeah, it definitely has its moments. It is occasionally beautiful. I have to say, however, that the aggressive monotony of their songs gets on my nerves. They clearly delight in the idea of making their listeners uncomfortable, and I'm cool with that. However, the plodding drudgery of their song-writing makes for dull going at times, and I don't feel as much of the emotional focus and intensity that some of their best previous work had.

there was another discussion on here about the album.. if the search was better id try and find it .. :S

i personally love it! but im a plodding drudgery lover from way back...

haha, yes plodding drugery is generally a favorite genre of mine as well

I heard they rocked it live though... @ Coachella. But, yeah, why can't they get a little happy... cmon! Life isn't that depressing!!

life is that depressing. if it wasn't they would not make albums like this.
too bad it was shit compared to the self-titled or dummy.

coz may end up sounding like The Cure singing Friday I'm In Love??????
lol

i couldn't give you a clear analysis, because i've only listened thru it a few times, which is exactly the point. interesting, but not engaging. i like music like that less and less, tho i'm still guilty of making it most the time.

it sounds muddy thats for sure

i like it a lot. it shows growth & her singing is better than ever. it has a stronger feel to it.
i just wish they wouldn't wait years to release an album.
why so serious?

It's interesting work and I'm glad to have it.

Off-topic, but one of my biggest disappointments this decade was Goldfrapp: the first one was IMHO amazing; then they chose an uninteresting path and milked it since then.

THIRD is like seeing an old friend again after ten or more years. They've changed a bit, they maybe look different, but you do a quick mental adjustment and carry on.

Anyway, we'll always have Dummy. Here's looking at you, kid.

I'm finding it inspiring and unexpected. I always hated trip hop as a genre and it always seemed to me that Portishead was about far more than that. Then again, I still love "Campfire Headphase", which everyone here seems to hate.

I only hate campire headphase because you lurv it

what's with the time attached to posts here? In no part of the world did I post at "11:43am," as it was 10:00am pacific, 1:00pm Eastern, etc.
