--> Today was my last day as a student teacher in an urban 8th grade classroom. I learned a lot that will take me years to process through. I made all of the kids write me a letter of apology for whatever they felt bad about(they were pretty abusive) and what I got were a lot of really nice letters and a lot of honesty- which is hard to get out of an 8th grader.
If you know somebody in 8th grade, you really know them, because it's all hanging out. All the emotions and traits and anxieties that make up a person are completely exposed in an adolescent. It's been a real exercise in psychology, and restraint.
So I'm now back down to just working evenings part time, and looking for a job. If you know of a teaching job in the Pacific Northwest, let me know.
I can't wait to get back to music. I picked up a guitar the other day, and I'm so rusty that my hands hurt again...

put it this way, mike. the county I live in currently has 150 jobs posted. Edzapp lists fewer jobs than that for almost the entire region!

they PDX job market has been shit for some time. Seattle is pretty good for IT but I dunno about teaching. some help I am!
it's basically impossible to get excited about Spokane but the job market seems pretty healthy here in general. again, though, I have no idea about education. my wife has had no trouble but she's got a good network and she's teaching pretty specific subjects.
also, opticecho, why replace the .s with (dot)s? are you afraid of google spiders infesting your site with filthy webs of stray hits?

good luck with the job hunting!

out of interest how old is an 8th Grader in years?
Recent blogs: The Digger, Cheston Dies, My Album

8th graders are 13-15 years old.

well, I remember what a horrible dipshit I was at that age, that's for sure... verbally abusing teachers, stealing cars (no joke), smuggling booze into school, you name it.

Portland job market is frighteningly vacant. Good luck.
FYI: school teachers where I grew up worked in mills and fought forest fires (forest service and independent contractors) or operated small business (my dad was a teacher and did beekeeping in the Summers.
Living wage has gone relatively unchanged since I left to California and returned. I had hoped the economy to improve more quickly.
: I would like to thank the White House for great employment prospects for 8 years! whoop! :

its really a lot better in the southeast economically. the NW in particular has been pretty aggressive about taxing and regulating business and they pushed a LOT of business out. the SE has let business have a total free ride- even paid for them to come in a lot of cases. We've got a lot of not-so-great non-union manufacturing jobs now. It's a give and take.
All i heard when i was in portland was that the city was growing so fast. they must not be having any children!
Seattle pays a lot better than Portland, but i've never been there... we're thinking that economics may have us stuck here for the next year while we save up money. moving is going to cost about $10,000 by my estimate.

work is drying up everywhere. It's horrible. I really wish you all the luck in the world.

10,000???! Wow, how does that break down? Are you moving a house???

Let's hear the best of the apology letters!

lol ok:
Rent doubles when I move out west. I expect to pay about 1300-1500 a month.
Most places want A security deposit thats the size of the first month's rent, and the first month's rent.
So there's $3000 I've got to front. Then renting a van is about 1800. Gas for that van will be about 1800. Then I've got to have Victoria follow me in her car.(i'll be towing my truck) and the gas for that is going to be about $500.
So, right away, there's $6600 off the top of my head.
Add in the fact that as a new teacher I have no salary till my first month of work is OVER, and the fact that western schools go back about a month later than we do, and that takes up the rest of my money on food, etc.

holy crap really, rents are that high around here these days?? jebus, crazy.

I don't understand how so many folks can afford to move to the NW lately... Maybe it's mostly middle aged careerists at this point, snapping up high rise condos and such...

If we can find jobs, we CAN afford some place on the other side of Puget Sound, or near the Oregon coast. Honestly, you can rent a house right on the beach or the bay for half of what you can rent a house closer to town for. Victoria just got a call from Bremerton Schools, and they'd like to employ her. But jobs are hard to come by on that side of the bay.

Haha. My wife's name is Victoria too. Our neighbor has a cat named Victoria. blahahahakjljk
