I think most of the butt-hurt is just coming from the fact that they're not from the scene.
for some reason I was pissed at Timbaland too, probably for just that reason, but with these guys I don't give a shit.
their music sucks though. I'm all about "great artists steal" but these guys are lousy burglars.

Had it felt like a tribute or an honest attempt to make something interesting I wouldn't have cared.

one of the artists on my label did a show with them. it didn't go particularly well. they are uhm, let's say cranky. this was before they had a drummer on stage, so it was all 8 bit + bass + voice
but you guys are coming down on them like they're child molesters

i think you touched a nerve there
so they sampled an obscure creative commons track to make an obscure b-side track that isn't even on their album - so far that's not commercial use is it?
they should have credited the work and released it under creative commons themselves. but i can see how that can be done out of ignorance or possibly not caring. it's kind of a lame track anyways. either way now everyone's talking about crystal castles AND lo-bat AND creative commons licensing. which is a good thing.
anyways while we're on the subject, check out navel4eve. she's the one who played a show with them. she writes her own music using trackers or ableton live, doesn't sample anything and generally kicks ass.

I dunno. I listened to lo-bat. before I had ever heard of Crystal Castles, and I like both.
First off, lo-bat.'s music is licensed under Creative Commons (attribution/non-commercial), so it is perfectly fine legally and morally to use his music as part of your own, as long as you meet the terms of the license (give him credit in some form and don't use the music you create for commercial purposes). The license doesn't prohibit commercial use, it just means you have to negotiate a license for it in the normal way.
Lo-bat. himself said he is ok with it:
link
"Yes that's obviously samples of 'my little droid needs a hand' in there, no question about it. ... I don't think it counts as plagiarism, for me the song is different enough to be an original creation of CC. Sampling is part of electronic music, think we all agree on that. ... What I don't find ok however is that they didn't respect the licence I choose for my music. ... It's very likely they picked it up somewhere, sampled it and never cared about the original author and his intentions. A bit sad and stupid, but for me not enough reason to sue them."
And now they have signed a contract with him for the songs that were released commercially:
link
So they're at least trying to make things right. Don't lynch them unless they deserve it.
You can also read their record label's response, which glosses over some things:
link
But hey, if they don't have a problem violating copyright, I'm not going to feel guilty about listening to their mp3s without giving them any money.
