--> Ok. I just finished my federal Stafford Loan Exit Interview. They estimate my annual discretionary income will be $-14,000.
I'll be paying either $178/mo for 30 years or $308/mo for 10 years. For a job that pays $30,000.

So, all that whining about feeing bad about not getting make music. Forget that happened.

It's all about the graduated payment plan (for me, at least)

Is that a student loan or something? Sorry, not up on the USA jargon.
Either way, this doesn't sound good - I got stressed just reading it. Sorry to hear it.
But there are ways of coping. I know people who have lived with huge debts for years and are doing fine.
Sorry, I don't have any great advice. Just dont' use my patented 'head-in-the-sand' method.

I owe $26,800 for my 4 year degree. Whats a graduated payment plan? the one that is like a balloon mortgage?

somewhere in the fine-print of marriage (what's mine is yours, yours is mine): I married into $25k of student loans my wife took out for her BA in literature.

at least try to be happy you're not paying for someone else's useless degree!

and by "useless degree" I meant to say "highly valuable life experience"...

yes dear? coming... wha-psh!!

graduated payment plan is where you pay more later when you are supposedly making more money.

I have had professors tell me to basically keep on taking classes and just defer your student loan...but I think the government has closed that loophole.

I think I might just have gotten one of those worthless degrees. When I was a clueless high school student from a totally impoverished background, $30 sounded like it was awesome! I really don't care about money that much, but damn, I gotta meet my basic expenses!
I guess i'm gonna have to get my master's in something almost totally unrelated to make ends meet...

So, did I read correctly that your discretionary income is NEGATIVE 14,000?

If so, damn. I think you can defer for a year for financial hardship.

yes, negative.
i had better make a new record to sell, quick!

I think it's time for an online master's for you! Defer that shite.

(I might do the same, right now I pay $210/month)

don't spend that -14K all in one place. if you can save like -1000 a year, you can retire at the end of time.

when i get my master's its going to be healthcare related. if i am going to go into even more debt, it's going to be for something I can make a living doing. I'm thinking about occupational, physical, or speech therapy. I'd love audiology, but that field's dumbass professional organization has successfully lobbied to make it a phd only field.

How about music therapy?

I've really become interested in it - when I 'retire' from doing science, I would like to go into music therapy.

There are a lot of different directions to take it as well, such as teaching singing to parkinson's patients, etc.

I've got my Stafford exit interview on Thursday. I'll probably owe just a little less. Fortunately I managed to get funding for the last half of the degree, or else it would have been much, much worse.
