--> A Teac A-2300S for $30. The thing is dope though I think I have to clean the heads and service the pinch roller, as it is gummed it pretty good. The 1/4" inputs are buzzing as well, though the stereo line-in seems to be fine. Ran it directly to my USB audio but I think I need to run it through a grounded receiver to get a decent signal.

I'm excited to feed it some tracks!

it only records bongos, digeridoo and sitar, tho.

mini-update on the TEAC masturbation:

Line-in and outs are solid. I also fed a signal through the machine back into a digital recorder to test its ability to warm a signal strictly as a preamp. Brilliant.

Furthermore, with some knuckle-work, the pinch roller can be engaged and disengaged manually (until i fix it). The acute jankiness of the heads is just enough to get that sweet patina of lo-fi on the on the tape. Great intermittent hiss flutters.

What do I need to de-gum that pinch roller without killing the unit?

hmm, why would degumming any kind of roller ruin a unit? are you talking about the wheel thats on an arm that flexes and runs the reels?
Don't use it on the heads, but you might try alcohol on a q tip.

tharts funny.

i just sold a teac a-2300sx the other day

congratulations! my reel to reel is my sweet sweet lover.

reel-to-reel's are dope! I miss my old fostex 8 track one. totally one of my favorite recording devices ever.

mixing to tape makes everything sound so much better.

I agree with the alcohol and qtip. That's what I use to clean everything on mine and it works beautifully.
