Some one on 8bitcollective made the above video and posted it on YouTube. Then it was taken down after copyright infringement claims by a third party.

Which brings up the point. If its not really your music and you've violated the licence that it was released under why say that its violated your copy right? That's Lo-bat's call.

Or Covax whose drum have been sampled pretty heavily by CC.

What strikes me as funny is that if CC had contacted any of the artists they would have had no problems. Also if they had made statements about how they had no contact with the chiptune scene and came up with the sounds on their own.

Plagiarism: This is another good read on the subject.

ugh. spare me.. spare us all. another one of these bands doing the same shit.

this hipster chip tune indie rock electro trash dance party music is equivalent to the skittery beats and FM bell tones of IDM 2002. fucking tired already. something new please.

whatever.. tone deaf people w/bad taste need to dance too.

jesus, barf

from the pic in the nme article it would appear that they are mentally challenged

fucking pitchfork can eat my shit, my hate for those hipster wannabe dickheads is VIOLENT

Man these guys are just a victim of their own success. If they weren't so famous they'd be left alone. The assholey things they've done to everyone else's shit.. trevor brown, chanel ... will catch up in the end. But then, whatever happened to the timbaland case.

i love FM. especially those FM pads. i love those bell tones too. i guess this makes me a hipster fraud, just like crystal castles

pitchfork: talk about elitist snobbery at its finest (or worst?).

papergoose said: "man, you guys have no idea.

CC played SXSW this year several times, all packed houses. These guys pretty regularly pack whatever venue they are playing. It's definitely a big deal.

They get pitchfork support and linkage, and their album got a 7.8 rating by them. Like it or not, pitchfork holds HUGE indie cred and pushes record sales tremendously, esp. for a high-scoring album such as this.

It's really pathetic what these kids did, and everyone should know about it."

I'm sure they are loving this free press guys! keep it up! may the name Crystal Castles remain on the front page FOREVER!!1!

1. 'All publicity is good publicity' isn't quite accurate, or certainly depends a lot on how you define 'good'. Maybe CC will earn more money as a result of this commotion, but it makes them look like sleazy chumps and badly undercuts their credibility all the same. There is such a thing as being famous for the wrong reasons.

2. This isn't just about CC, this is about the broader issue of whether bands can/should be able to 'get away' with stealing music. The blog buzz about this strengthens the message that they can't, and that they will be help accountable.

3. Don't forget that it's not just CC that are getting publicity from this, but also people who are more deserving of it (imo), including Lo Bat and Covox.

1. right, but most likely character assessments will fall on deaf ears - CC's target audience cares about as much as your average housecat. those who would dismiss them for being chumps have already done so. as a side note, I believe that this whole drama has a lot more to do with cliques than morality.
2. I have mixed feelings on that, too. part of me admires their audacity, cannabalistic or defeatist or self-hating as that sounds. I know if it was my music that was getting ripped off I'd probably be more than a little butthurt about it, but as long as credit was given I wouldn't really care (and I do realize credit was not given until they were prodded, which is pretty lame.)
3. I would like to see how many people have gotten into Covox and Lo-Bat as a result of Crystal Castles. I think a generous guess would be in the double digits.

that said, this whole drama has revived my interested in LSDJ and I've finally purchased a license now that they are dirt cheap, and have also acquired a DMG. now all that's left is the pain in the ass of getting a transferer II and 32M smart card.

I think a lot of people are completely missing the point here.

Crystal Castle isn't about creativity or "for the love of the music". It is about some producer guy finding a cute girl to sing over some tunes he stole for his own fame and fortune. *seriously*. This whole thing is about "the industry" and straight up money. Hating on them because they are successful is just as ridiculous as hating on them for stealing the "Chip Tunes Sound". All of that I could stomach. It happens. And if that was all they did, at least they did the work. But, they have gone further than just band-wagoning on a great innovative sound and a scene, they have outright STOLEN MUSIC and claimed ownership for fame and profit.

Taken further, this is an example of an artist who does something for the love of it (Lo Bat / Covox) that makes little to no money from his work, that gets said work stolen and someone else, Crystal Castle, gets PAID to PLAY those songs in front of people! How much do you think CC is making for the gigs they play? Trust me, this isn't some fly-by-night operation. This is some serious "industry" sh#t. Do they do it for free? You bet they don't. Those cats get PAID, and well. I bet CC makes more on 1 gig than all the chiptunes ppl do combined, for a month.

If we dig into this bands past what other failed projects were there... I can't wait to see what comes up.

BAM. Thank's Google!

This dude has been trying to make it for a LONG TIME, and been trying to hide his identity the whole time! So smart, so "professional".

His real name is Claudio Palmieri. He used to be in a "sleeze rock" band. F*&%king sleeze rock? Now Chiptunes?? Give me a break. This dude is trying to make a living, not make art.

Here is a little info from that post linked above: "Palmieri’s secret hard rock past also includes time spent in the early stages of Warner-signed alt-rock band, Die Mannequin, along with Death From Above/MSTRKRFT dude Jesse F. Keeler."

So, this isn't some case of a kid making a mistake, the whole thing has been orchestrated. He has finally arrived, and getting paid on the backs of people who actually BELIEVE in what they do rather than see an opportunity and jump on it.

Crazy side thought: the RIAA will fine you if you "Steal CC Music".

Sorry for the rant, I couldn't help but get worked up when I saw that people weren't taking this situation seriously.

license said: "1. right, but most likely character assessments will fall on deaf ears - CC's target audience cares about as much as your average housecat. those who would dismiss them for being chumps have already done so."

I hadn't heard of these CC cunts before this stuff and I'm certain that there are thousands of others in the same boat. So while the kids going to their shows might not care, lots of other people do.

The point was that the keystrokes spilled on this subject do more than publicise CC, whether or not you agree with those condemning this despicable behavior.

3. I would like to see how many people have gotten into Covox and Lo-Bat as a result of Crystal Castles. I think a generous guess would be in the double digits.

A more relevant question would be how many people have gotten into lobat and covox *as a result of this controversy*, compared to how many ppl have gotten into CC as a result of this controversy. I don't know the answer. The point is that the micromusic guys are getting publicity from this too.

Sentiments along the lines of: 'talking about it just makes things worse' almost always miss the boat imo. Things aren't that simple.

you completely misunderstood what i said. let me try and explain it.. i was comparing something tired, old, done to death ___skittery beat IDM at hip hop tempos w/the FM bell tone melodies that was more common that oxygen in the early 2000''s____ to something also done to death more recently ___annoying hipsters making indie type dance music w/8 bit sounds and with bad lyrics over the top of it all and thinking they are better than sliced bread___

i wasn't attacking your beloved FM synthesis which i happen to love too... but FM bell tones have been poisoned. find something else to love...

FM bell ends?
