OMG, I think I found the origin of the butterzone. I was watching "Hackers" the other day (for some reason, it's a stupidly enjoyable movie) and I heard this dialogue:
hacker's screenplay said: "
KATE
Hey! What are you guys doing in here?
PHREAK
I'm sorry, we're sorry, just checking out your fly laptop!
NIKON
Yeah, it's hyped, you know... you're in the butter zone now, baby.
PHREAK
(smiling)
Uh-huh!
KATE
(her tone changing)
Yeah, it is...
(she comes over to it)
I wanna triple the RAM...

This was 1994...so wow.

butterzone is probably just a screenwriters extrapolation of the term 'butter' which means the top or the best. as in 'have you heard that hendrix solo? oh man it's butter".
and i want to say that hackers is an awesome movie. those 3d objects that they thought would be floating around in cyberspace are hilarious.
forbidden zone is also quite amazing. featuring music by the mystic nights of the oingo boingo before they became simply oingo boigo. there's also some stolen cab calloway tracks in the movie tht aren't on the soundtrack.
so if you haven't seen hackers or the forbidden zone, you should. they're butter.

dude. I second mpg...this is like my all time favorite movie. I'm not even joking. when I was twelve I think I rented it every weekend and eventually bought it on dvd. I didn't realize that the term butterzone originated there, though. Whenever I heard it I thought of that movie, but I kind of thought it was something people said.
