Went to the penultimate Stars of the Lid gig last night, at a church here in Newcastle upon Tyne, and quite enjoyed it (even if my bum was numb being perched on a pew for three hours).
They had a string trio with them, and stood either side of the trio, fiddling with their various effects boxes etc. Both chaps had MIDI guitars and controller keyboards triggering soft samplers (they had their laptops closed, on the floor beneath the keyboard stands), looping pedals, distortion pedals, and an upright piano. It was at times difficult to see what they were doing, as the guitar strums didn't always correlate with what was coming out of the speakers (due to the processing chains no doubt), but it was cool to see such an involved setup.
Did anyone else catch them?

Hey,
i saw them in Ravenna (ITALY) (i don't remember when, maybe in January/february)
they played with a string trio too...but i must say that i prefer early works...
...no doubt about the great sound!

I know brian mcbride incorporates both guitar synths (like the roland one) and harmonist/pitchshifter pedals in his rig - I would guess he probably fades his guitar sound into that with a volume or slow gear type envelope - it's all about the mix of sounds. I can get very similar sounds using something like transverb fed from a reverse reverbed pedal.
Probably TMI.
Ultimately, it's really the dynamics of his playing and how he interacts with Adam that makes it much less static. Watching them play has made me pay much more attention to the fadeouts to my playing and incorporating more silence into my performance.

Absolutely; it takes a lot of restraint to wait for two or three seconds after the first note has died before swelling in the next. I'm just working on a little guitar swell piece now, inspired by the other night, and although it sounds more like Tim Hecker now, it was difficult to resist the urge to cram some more sounds in there (in my usual bombastic manner!).

Dom -- thanks for the tour diary link, was fun to read. Very frank and honest about the toils of touring, that's for sure.

I saw them at ATP this year and they were very cool (don't know them well enough to recognise the songs though). Also saw Atlas Sound and The Octopus Project which were my em highlights!
