Fredo: of course to each his own. Cronenberg's movies always fall apart, that's the point, and sometimes that descent is really beautiful but in existenZ, yeah, it's awkward. now that you mention it, though, I wanna watch it again. aesthetically, I thought it was really good. just the structure was clumsy.
I gotta watch some more of his stuff though, he's so good at what he does.

+1 Fear and Loathing
+1 Old Boy

This is turning into a good recommendation thread, I gotta check some of this stuff out.

Exactly - it reflects life and might feel unsatisfactory to some people. The pied piper poem really ties it up for me.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a complete mess imo but maybe that ws the point?

Yes - it's exactly like the book and is just wonderful in its chaos.

I forgot about battle royale, which is strangely affecting

OK, I'm oversharing...I'll quit suggesting stuff

God of Cookery (must have been the inspiration for iron chef, only I think the movie is also a musical).

Anything with sound production by Scott Bruzenak

for a list, see link

STARmeter: ? ^ 22% since last week why? "

I think that last question is a sign that IMDB has become intelligent.

I have got to see The Gay Bed & Breakfast of Terror.

i was thinking the exact same thing

Female prisoner Scorpion ... 1,2&3.. or is there a fourth? It's really good!
Black Emperor - Really fun bosozoku film.
existenz was great back in the day, but i just caught it again, and damn, i was thinking it'd be a lot better if it was 3 hours long, same with altered states. i think somehow my attention span has increased.

sunshine - strangely great
solaris - oho the remake was actually good.

speed racer -- ahhahhahhha .... i've got to hand it to the editing, direction and pacing. It's a lot better than i thought it would be.
oh and r-point. --- a korean ghost story about a recce mission to find out what happened to a lost platoon during the vietnam war.

Regretably lovefilm does not stock this particular title

jogn said: "r-point"

i've seen that - i thought it was pretty poor though, the inane wandering, the 'mysterious girl', the inevitable ending

I really liked this too. although I have to say that I haven't seen the original and also I really like Soderbergh (Schizopolis is one of my favorite movies, I think it's just about perfect aesthetically)

damn i haven't seen schizopolis. Got to go check that one out. The original solyaris i felt was a great movie, but i can see how the pacing might not be quite everyone's cup of tea. i kind of prefer soderbergh's version.

i thought r-point had great moments. The wandering bits is a story device for quite a number of chinese/oriental ghost stories. It's really entrenched. Ah the ending, i could see a mile away.

I really have no idea what you've seen, so pardon me if some of these seem like movies "everybody" has already seen. Here's some of my favorite movies:
Scream, Blackula, Scream! (it's about a million times better than you think)
Forbidden Planet
Cry Baby
Shaft
Robot vs. Aztec Mummy
Glen or Glenda(also see the Ed Wood Story if you rent this)
Speedo POV
Off the Charts: The Song Poem Story
Country Boys
Blade Runner
The French Connection
Snatch
The Abominable Dr.Phibes (but god not the sequel)
Bullit
Also be very careful and don't rent the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer or you may be sucked into a vortex of nerdiness as I was.

Forbidden Planet, Blade Runner and Bullit = all good!
I want to see The Song Poem Story!
And you can rest assured that I won't be going near Buffy!

Buffy requires that you suffer through the first couple of weak seasons, but somehow the show turned out to be one of the most complex, entertaining, and philosophically complex shows I have ever seen.
