--> Well, after some recent problems with software i've decided against using my laptop,it's just too much of a headache.I'm stuck posting on support forums trying to figure out whats going on when i should be making music and getting a liveset together. It's very frustrating. That is the one aspect where hw is,imo better. It works,no f'ing about with bug fixes or os updates.Unfortunately my RS7000 is not very portable so i won't be able to take it on my bike but sod it,there's far too many things that can go wrong with a software based setup and i have had plenty of problems.

This is not a recent thing,it's been my experience from the start and since i started using hardware it's really shed a lot of light on the pros and cons of each approach.I think i've had the RS crash in me once in the time i've had it.How many times has Live or windows crashed?I've lost count!

I think there's enough involved with music, especially pa, without having to worry about your equipment flaking out at any minute. So i was wondering if anyone else had had the same experience or if it's just me.Have i been unlucky?Or is a software based setup inherently unreliable and prone to problems?

Like i say this is not a recent thing.I turned to hardware because of all the problems i was having with software;if it wasn't one thing it was another and that is still the situation now!So is it just me or have you had a similar experience? Is software all it's cracked up to be?

Cheers,

i've recently picked up a cassette 4 track really cheap off of ebay for just this reason.
my setup is mostly hardware anyways. a rhodes, some guitars, a few synths, a sampler.

before when i wanted to make music it was like:
plug something into my firebox
make sure my imac was on, make sure i'm logged in (im never logged in, my wife always uses the computer when im at work or asleep)
open live or logic
mess with the settings in the firexbox control software to remove the pad on the inputs
make sure my i/o otions in live or logic are set to the firebox
arm a track in live or logic
get my hands on an instrument and play (finally)

now the 4 track is setup up as my mixer, everything goes through it so if i want to play all i have to do is turn the 4 and my monitors on and play. if i come up with anything i like i can easily record it. if i am jamming with a friend/s and want to we can easily record to individual tracks whatever we are doing and capture the idea. so far i like it a lot. i really need a patchbay so i can hook up all of my effects to the sends on the 4 track.

i love the computer and the endless effects and signal processing possibilities is provides, maybe too much. maybe to the point of it being a total distraction a lot of the time. i am thinking about hooking it up via the effects send on the 4 track as well once i get a patchbay. i think that really would be the best of both worlds.

maybe your plugins are in the way?"

No it is not a compaq!I actually bought it from an audio guy. It's not the plugins that are in the way,it's everything else!I'm def gonna go all hw for live,i reeally need to simplify things..

I took some pics earier with my gear in the bag for tylth ;P.Everything fit nicely but then i realised i have four power supplies plus cables to pack as well. Two with external transformers.

I had been thinking of the RS as an altenative to the laptop but didn't think it would fit in the bag.Any way i measured and the bag is wide enough!I did not think it would fit at all. This solves most of my problems.I'll have to see what i can transfer from my laptop but this solves a lot of issues for me,performance wise as well =P

ejector, thanks. You reminded i need to get a Zoom H4 to record the live stuff and i can use it in the same way in to record stuff as and when the inspiration strikes, and not have to go through a process each time you want to record something quick!Glad your setup is working well.Hopefully mine will now.

Cheers,

-T

My beef with computers is the instant obsolescence of control/editing software provided with hardware over the last 15 years. Instead of spending some time and money on improving the hardware UI (knobs, sliders, displays), manufacturers ship software control panels.

These are often fantastically useful, while they last. Most manufacturers do not bother to upgrade the software when changes to OS's render the software useless. This makes it frustrating to use hardware that still functions perfectly but that was just not engineered to be programmed easily (if at all) from the hardware interface.
