--> They're very important, apparently. But I don't understand them. Or maybe I do but I just don't like them or I don't care.

I imagine that most of us here don't. I was thinking this morning that the part of my brain that is traditionally devoted to sports teams, plays, and players in normal American males is devoted to artists/bands, songs, and synth manufactures, models, and architecture/parameters. Probably why most of my male friends are either synth nerds or are gay (sometimes both). Come to think of it, it's a little odd that I can't think of any gay friends who are sports fans.

Anyway, I find this a little depressing since I cannot relate to other males in everyday life. Just my small group of friends which is slowly dissipating from Spokane, and you guys (and 3 or 4 gals). Since I don't think that my awareness of different synths is doing me any favors I was thinking maybe I should start studying sports. But that strikes me as even more sad and nerdy. Plus it seems like an all or nothing kind of thing - either you don't watch sports and don't give a shit, or you watch them obsessively, as much as you can.

If I start watching them it would be like an alien studying Earth culture. Plus I would always feel like I was watching The Family Guy ... something intended for a wide audience that somehow doesn't include me that has all aspects of what is widely accepted as entertainment but which provides me no satisfaction on intellectual, aesthetic, or, well, entertainment levels.

The fact that I'm thinking so hard about this seems to tell me that this would be a futile exercise and that it would probably just make me feel more depressed. So here's to finding more gay guys and synth nerds to hang out with in Spokane. And accepting that I'm just another sensitive artfag that will always have trouble bonding with the everyman, which I acknowledge with both sadness and, frankly, condescension.

but if you actually want to try to open your mind and understand them, you could try to find some person to explain some of the subtleties to you. i've done that with a few things, like boxing and football, and it makes them really fun to watch. im in the same boat as you otherwise-rather go see some fruity shakespeare or listen to a talk by a scientist.

Sports are fun to watch... especially when money is involved.
Maybe we should start a betting pool regarding vsts. Maybe bet on when Native Instruments will release Reaktor 6!

my friend threw a party once where they had ultimate fighting on one tv and then hard gay porn on a tv sitting right next to it. i don't know how i missed that, but apparently it was 'mesmerizing'.

I think for most guys it is just something to kill the time like people that talk about the weather too much.

I don't understand 'the home team' thing. In Chicago people like to pretend they like either the cubs or the sox. It's a fake rivalry that is supposed to say something about you. The people I know hate when any basketball team is doing good because it will diminish their Micahael Jordan Chicago Bulls from being the greatest team ever.

Don't worry. Patrick Bateman's got you covered: link

Especially when they have strange sports such as baton twirling, double dutch, karate breaking, and other such activities. The commentary makes it even better.

I'm not so much a professional sports fan - I like to watch people who still have passion for what they do. That's why it's ESPN2 for me"

See, now this stuff I can dig. And I can't remember what event it was (for obvious reasons) but I saw some snowboarders doing their thing in some kind of international competition and I was totally mesmerized. I dig airshows too - still an air force brat at heart.

LOL. I love that movie and that was one of my favorite scenes.

Exactly. The draft ensures that we get attached to no player and our 'home team' is really just a flimsy cover for a company that takes our money.

Again, why I'm not really into 'professional' sports. It's more fun when you either know someone who's playing or they're passionate about it, like the olympics (ok, maybe bad example).

But I think mlbot's right - christ, I got sucked into watching 'Top Chef' this season, and got caught up in the competition - and reality tv is really a bad version of sports.

I bet you $100 this has more to do with the fact you don't like hanging out with sports fans than it describes any sort of link between sexuality+sports.

Also (and this isn't directed at License) should i even have to mention the levels of irony involved in coming to a place full of men and electronic music and posting "that's so gay"? Please.

Right, that's why I said it's a little odd. Though I do know quite a few homophobic sports fans, but that's probably more of a signifier of the ubiquity of both than any correlation.

Speaking as a scientist, it turns me on when you talk like that.

In that case, let's go watch some wrestling together.

i was once the mascot for my local football team: link
it says something about my hometown that the local team is sponsered by a Sweetie Manufacturer.
explains why everyone dies of heart attacks in their 40s.

I would use the reverse of this and put a sports fan at an electronic show..and imagine how bored and annoyed he would be listening to a bunch of whiney kids talking about how they need to upgrade to Max/MSP 5 and fix their patches..

I am not a sports fan, but I understand it all.

I usually end up talking about video games with people instead of sports

It's a pretty good common ground
