--> They're very important, apparently. But I don't understand them. Or maybe I do but I just don't like them or I don't care.

I imagine that most of us here don't. I was thinking this morning that the part of my brain that is traditionally devoted to sports teams, plays, and players in normal American males is devoted to artists/bands, songs, and synth manufactures, models, and architecture/parameters. Probably why most of my male friends are either synth nerds or are gay (sometimes both). Come to think of it, it's a little odd that I can't think of any gay friends who are sports fans.

Anyway, I find this a little depressing since I cannot relate to other males in everyday life. Just my small group of friends which is slowly dissipating from Spokane, and you guys (and 3 or 4 gals). Since I don't think that my awareness of different synths is doing me any favors I was thinking maybe I should start studying sports. But that strikes me as even more sad and nerdy. Plus it seems like an all or nothing kind of thing - either you don't watch sports and don't give a shit, or you watch them obsessively, as much as you can.

If I start watching them it would be like an alien studying Earth culture. Plus I would always feel like I was watching The Family Guy ... something intended for a wide audience that somehow doesn't include me that has all aspects of what is widely accepted as entertainment but which provides me no satisfaction on intellectual, aesthetic, or, well, entertainment levels.

The fact that I'm thinking so hard about this seems to tell me that this would be a futile exercise and that it would probably just make me feel more depressed. So here's to finding more gay guys and synth nerds to hang out with in Spokane. And accepting that I'm just another sensitive artfag that will always have trouble bonding with the everyman, which I acknowledge with both sadness and, frankly, condescension.

to each his own...fans of music bands aren't any better in my opinion...

facts about bands are just as useless as facts about sport stars/teams.

Im not really a fan of sports but I did used to like watching some when I was stoned - mainly snooker - all those colours whizzing around the table!

I find music fans just as boring as sports fans but Im sure they all find me boring so no love lost really.

you got to be careful what you call sports. what you are talking about are "team" or "boring" sports.
these are totally shit, your made to play them at school to make you socially accetable and unnaturally
competitive.

i enjoy an "extreme" or stupid sport namely mountain biking. its amazing fun. you get to see the nature and
you get to scare the shit out of sheep and hill walkers. and the adrenaline rush from charging
down a mountain on a bike cannot be matched by street drugs. awesome.

uh, i also like to watch skatevideos

It is the competitive sports that fail to get my interest. I enjoy snowboarding, longboarding and skating, and the only person to compete with is yourself, in pushing your limits and motivating yourself into it. Sports with winners suck. I guess when I think about it, the activities I'm into are more usually known as 'playing', where the point is not to reach a specific goal state, but to just enjoy doing what you do

and license, spokane!? what is that!? move to a larger city!

tylth, is your previous post done whilst drunk or a case of temporary dyslexia? ;-)

but that's just me."

my favorite sport is raving

i like playing soccer. and i like snowboarding. i also like ableton live, breakcore, and knitting. but i don't fall into one of the "normal" people brackets, and i'm willing to bet most of you don't either.

I came from a town where everyone--myself included--was passionate about the local college basketball team. And it was really everyone. Men, women, and the music geeks too. I've seen free jazz shows rescheduled to accommodate the tournament schedule. I've seen a bar with Merzbow on the jukebox packed with music scene types glued to the TV for a meaningless early season non-conference game against an unranked squad. The hippest hipster hangout had a painting of our former coach on the wall.

Why did we like it? Well, I like basketball because at its best it's beautiful. A smart outlet pass. The discipline and motion of a well-executed Princeton offense. A player reading a block perfectly. It's like watching ballet, only you never know how it will end.

There was also a real camaraderie, a sense of tradition, and for us (the "outsiders") a sense of connection to the community at large.

And playing it is just fun.

i think generally its abad idea, trying to get interested in something, just to keep a social life intact
sounds a little bit like fooling yourself.

but i doN#t have any solution to this.

btw i really enjoy watching soccer. the thing is, as in music, you gotta know the details and all the things behind the game, mayb even the players and stuff to really appreciate it.
but strangely enough i do not enjoy talking about sports that much.

That said, since I've moved to Boston I've come to really hate the professional sports culture here. It's mercenary, all support (except for the Red Sox) is predicated on the success of the team, and the fans' attitudes towards the other players and their followers is ugly and crude. It's like the worst stereotype of frat-boy culture.

Which is sad, because I actually like watching the Sox and the Celtics.

BTW, frat boys are another group that sometimes gets an unfair rep from hipsters.

i think everyone gets an unfair rep from everyone else... can't we all get along??? :P that's why my sport is raving, because everyone wins
