--> For those who've been following the long drama surrounding my health troubles in the last few months, I wanted to give you a minor update.

Background: Last October, fainted on the sidewalk in front of a bunch of em411ers in Portland, smashed my leg up. Spent months trapped in the house and losing my mind, now finally walking nearly normally.

The outstanding question, however, has been: Why did I faint? And why does it continue to happen periodically?

Today I did a "tilt table" test, which is the most horrible exam imaginable. Anyone else here done this? It's to look for nervous system glitches wherein you respond inappropriately to changing posture and standing for extended periods of time. I stood there for 1/2 hour, gradually become as sick as hell, and finally went out. When I get sick, I don't fucking around. I was nauseated and woozy for hours. So horrible.

Anyway, why does standing of all things make some people faint? It's a problem with the Vagus Nerve that drops blood pressure too much when you stand and blood pools in the legs. Or something like that. Anyway, it's harmless except when you break legs with it. I do deal with regular bits of faintness for which I eat salt / drink lotsa water, along with sitting or laying down. All in all, manageable.

I actually sort of wanted something less benign to turn up that would help explain general dizzinesss / fatigue / headache problems, but no dice so off to a neurologist with me.

Anyway, that's the deal. This story is pretty much concluded!

I don't certainly mean I like this blog. I don't. It's no fun for you, and I'm really sorry about that, Tantan. I hope you figure it out soon. It'll probably end up being some strange, harmless condition that you will have to experience from time to time and will influence your music writing to include long sessions of silence. You'll get famous for that. Oh, that's another of Tantans fainting spells. We close our eyes during this part. And all the kids that dig David Lynch will collect your records and listen... and meditate... and nap... and then wake to a new development of your music.

Yes!

Watching House MD helped me understand this diagnosis

LOL @ Fredo

Totally rad

Man, I dunno how I'd understand the world without House MD

shut up, ridiculously old fraud

just kidding

(mostly)

Hope you can get a definitive answer. I've had epilepsy since I was 5, and sometimes I just pass out too.

But the ladies dig the scars.

2008 is the year for intrusive health issues and the odd broken limb or trip to the hospital for stitches. so it's no wonder your fainting issues are carrying over into 2008. drag. i hope there is something that can be resolved. daily aspirin to thin the blood or eat more chocolate or meditation or some home remedy. if you pass out though be careful if river phoenix's ghost or keannu reeves are near by.

the tilt table test sounds shitty. sorry man. i hope you get well and at the very least find ways to cope while you are being investigated by doctors. neurologists are an interesting bunch.

Oh man, those tilt table tests can be torture for people that have a positive result. But on a good note, you had a positive test! I can tell you that it's even more frustrating for a patient when they're fainting and you can't figure out why. There are specialists who deal with this stuff. There are pills out there, but sometimes little things like salt tablets or lifestyle modifications can be the answer. It will take some work, and the problem won't be solved overnight, but you are on your way

One suggestion: hold off on the aspirin until a doctor says that you need it. I'd hate to see you get a subdural hematoma if you landed on your head. Chocolate or meditation on the other hand.. those are good
At least you've got some answers... and a benign one at that! dealing with medical issues is such a pita. I've gone thru something similar (loads of tests, cat-scans, surgery) to deal with my ear problem. Very frustrating, but getting an answer is satisfying to a certain extent. Wish you the best bruh...

btw, I remeber eons ago hearing you should never lock your legs while standing for long periods because it restricts blood flow. You should keep the knees partially bent. Wonder if the doc made such a suggestion or if it's an myth.

benign! it isn't just a county in africa!

LOL...astroid reminded me of a woody allen quote:

The most beautiful words in the english language aren't 'I love you' but 'it's benign'

wow, i'm glad you're okay now dude! does sitting down for a long time do the same thing? it's good they can pinpoint it like that, so at least you know how to avoid it.

i think that's true. i saw a kid in a wedding fall out right on the wedding stage. he was part of the wedding party and it was a long baptist ceremony with everyone crediting god for every little thing and there were lot's of little things and the kid just fell over like a little tree. at the time it was pretty funny. everyone was staring up at the wedding party and all of sudden.. wham! the kid was fine. no stitches or lumps. maybe he was just trying to get out of there because it was so boring. i was sitting next to a nurse who said "oh, i could see that one coming. he had his knees locked the whole time"

I got married last month. Having my knees locked was the only thing holding me standing at the alter. Had I bent my knees I'm sure I would have collapsed. WHile standing there, I was afraid my knee wobbles would translate to my suit pants and make them flap visibly, but I think no one noticed. As regards medicine, you are lucky to get a result, I get regular headaches and have had blood tests and ultrasound and cameras in my sinuses and tomographic brain scans and in the end they said 'we've no idea, but try this nose spray'.

Oh, and if you think it's nerve wracking to stand on front of an audience, it's ten times worse to stand at an alter, with the audience behind you!
