Maybe it's a bit late in the game to be attempting to build muscle mass, but, damn it, I'm sick of having grover body and avoiding taking my shirt off in the presence of another human being! (Grover body is skinny all over but with massive mid section. NOT attractive!)
A couple years ago I had some digestion issues and went on an insane diet, losing 40 pounds. It didn't solve my problem, and hell, at 140 pounds I was way too skinny, so I began to eat sugar and fun things again. I felt better! My symptoms subsided. Hooray! A year later I had gained nearly 50 pounds and got as fat as I have ever been in my life, approaching 190 pounds.
So, I have begun to train. And basically feel like a piece of damp cardboard set in a snowy driveway which has been warn down repeatedly by the wheels of an SUV. IT HURTS!
I'm writing this blog to sort of make this more serious. Now I can't wimp out.
Note to bodo and jchot: make sure you get your child, when the time is right, to do some form of solid physical activity because it sucks to have to do this in your late thirties.

a happy fatty is a sexy fatty.
an insecure hottie is still sad.
and nobody likes a party pooper.

I had to chuckle about overdoing it and making yourself sick. Whenever I try and go to a gym (say, biennially) I usually try and tick off every piece of gear in there, run myself into the ground, so I'm incapable of walking without pain all over my body the following week(s). But will I learn? Will I hell, damn you.
These days I'm getting to that point in life where just about every benign physical activity carries a certain amount of injury risk. I pulled a muscle in my wrist trying to do a press-up about six weeks ago, and still can't put any weight on it.
Do you have a bike? That seems to be a good way to exercise without cracking joints and tearing ligaments.

Yeah, I have been biking like crazy, actually lost 7 pounds in the last 3 weeks! I love biking. It's relaxing as well as good for you! And, adcbicyle/license, I hear you on the insecurity thang. I'm definitely not of the opinion that it's unattractive to be fat, btw. In fact, when I first gained weight I felt so happy. Coming from an Italian-American background, heft = health. But my experience over the last couple of years has actually been just the opposite. Heft = digestion problems and diminished energy.
haha @ Tantan's undone pants. I hear you there. And actually, my big pants were starting to get tight, so rather than buy a whole new wardrobe to keep comfy I'm going to hope I get my waist back down to somewhere in between where I was before, and where I am now.
Thanks for the support folks.

Ah -- just re-read you post; for some reason I read biking as running??? I tried jogging for about a year, which got me into shape, but also shot my knee.

@ Ochre: yes, running is for suckers. I really hate running. It hurts.
@ pierlu001: I had a long discussion with my singing teacher about this, and he's a really knowledgeable man who has taught lots of musicians in all genres of music and is also worked at a hospital with one of the leading throat docs... He said, when you have more weight you will perhaps have stronger lungs, because your body has to work harder to breathe. (I hope I understood him correctly.) But also, it will surely shorten your life to carry around a lot of extra weight. So he said it's a big trade off. Anyway, I don't want really to lose too much weight, just another 10 pounds maybe. I'd just like to redistribute that weight into me musculature!

btw, I think he was referring to Pavarotti-style extra weight as shortening your life, not your average meat on the bones.

i got all fat a couple of years ago and felt really shitty. then i went to india and shat my guts out for three weeks and came back 10 lbs skinnier. then i packed it all back on again. then i started riding my bike and have slimmed down to my post india weight, but now without all the shitting. i love riding my bike. my favorite part of my day is my ride to and from work. its the only reason i want a job -so i can bike to it!

i used to be super active and in really good cardio condition. now i get winded easily and i've got the typical fat around the midsection. i used to be able to run on the beach in miami in summer after working out. now my heart feels like it's gonna pop out of my chest if i hit the treadmill for 15 minutes. the most i ever weighted was 172 lbs and that was when i was working out and eating like a fucking pig everyday. i could go to outback and eat a bunch of wings, a salad. 24oz porterhouse and one of those brownie/icecream deserts and then go out drinking w/friends. it didn't matter what i ate i NEVER gained weight. eventually i quit working out so much because i got really bored with it and found more fun things to take up my time.
as soon as i hit 30 i got a desk job and 2 years later i was 10lbs heavier now i'm 212 lbs and getting ready to start actually running to get in shape. knees be damned. at least for the first while.. i need to shed some poundage and feel better. i think it's harder because i know how much i have to do and how much it's gonna suck. mostly i just want to feel better.
so, to all us 30+ fatties.. good luck w/the fat that swarms to the midsection.

i am a freak about working out, have no idea why, but have been for ages, and if i could offer any advice, it would be this, start slow, i know that's been said in this post, but it bears repeating
you can never go wrong w/ simply keeping a food diary (this really helps you see what your actually eating protein wise, carbs, fiber, etc), watching calories, walking every other day for 60 mins and stretching/yoga
in a month, add some weights and more cardio
each month add a bit more
but anytime i try something new, no matter how much i work out, even if its just a variation of a pilates exercise, i get sore as hell, and sometimes tweak something, go's to show our bodies need constant variation, constant variation while going very slow
