So, I just got a job teaching kids computer skills. I had really hoped to get some good multimedia stuff in, had a bunch of stuff planned, etc. Then I saw the lab today, and here are the specs I must work with:
Compaq Ipaq 800MHz Celeron, 128MB RAM.
So I need your help. Think back to what you were using for software for fun and work around this time. I am looking for a little graphics, audio, and office stuff here. Hopefully things that could provide a learning experience- but at the very least, things that'll keep em out of trouble.

um, good luck. maybe you can get open office running on that? old versions of standard programs, but it can be hard to track those down....

i think fruityloops 1 is a free download. same with rebith. you might be able to get kristal, audacity or even ptfree running on them too.

They are running Windows 2000. Most of my days will consist of 4 class periods that are an hour and 40 minutes. I'll teach them a little of something practical- basic windows use, office stuff, image editing, emailing, etc, set them off on a scavenger hunt or something, and then when they are done they can play with a game or music software etc. Towards the end of the summer as they get more proficient, I was hoping to teach them some audio software. They're rural kids in a relatively poor area- so their experience is going to vary enormously, but probably slant toward the low end of the spectrum for economic reasons- and the fact that they probably can't get broadband.
Hammerhead and FLStudio 1 are on the list for sure, as well as Rebirth and Buzz if they'll fit. I've got an old SoundForge hanging around, and Photoshop 2.0...
Oh my age range is from 6 to 12 years old.

I still use cubasis 2, its the OEM Cubase and it would run on that computer, you just cant use lots of plug ins and just using an audio editor can be fun.

I believe photoshop 6 will, but it'll be slow.
pagemaker...they can make their own little school paper or comic...
give them fun programming stuff like old logo ports or BASIC.
if all else fails just load up winamp, and let them play with geiss for the class period.
