Electronic Music other: London and EM
Store Written June 22 2008 , Tags: london, location
Recently I've been thinking about the way in which the place people live impacts the music that they make.

London's been my home for the last six or so years, and it's been during this time that I've become serious about making music. The city undoubtedly has a number of advantages, with the unlimited opportunities to hear interesting artists, and meet inspiring people with similar interests. There's also this feeling of energy, which drives me to get stuff done.

But it also has its downsides. Once you've worked enough hours to afford some extra space for production equipment, there's little time left to use it.

I often wonder if I'd be better off living out in the country - paying less to live but having more time to work on my own projects.

Is there a perfect place to make electronic music?

brihgton, although onyl slightly cheaper than london... you can get a usual 9 til 5 job at amex which pays pretty good, you then got the sea, etc... actually apart from that you just got the same deal as london really...

i tell you this though, i moved from dorset, in the middle of nowhere, to exeter, also pretty much the middle of nowhere, and now i live here, in brighton... what is different here is there are other people to interact with re: music making... in exeter, there are mostly kids with music 2000 making rubbish drum n bass and in dorset there is folk... so unless you want to do all your own stuff in your own bubble etc (i m not saying anything 's wrong with that of course...) then that s prolly why you pay to live there, in london, for the environment you are in / aiming to match... keep up with or whatevr...
Ive lived in London all my life - started north of the river and now Im south of it - and I very much dislike living here [Im on the zone 2/3 boundry].

Its too urban, with too much crime, drugs and general lack of any kind of civic pride. I have been looking to moving out to zone 6 where my sister is as the cheaper rent coupled with the prospect of being able to sit in a flat and not hear sirens, people swearing/screaming their heads off, traffic and just the general sound of never being more than 30 foot away from someone else, really suits me. Ive always preferred to be on the outside of things and then come into the centre when it suits me. I like my own space a lot.

You should both have a wander over to STFU Music which is a collective of a bunch of us here. We have gigs [sometimes with workshops] all over Europe on a regular basis and you get to meet us all in the flesh!
i live in leeds which is quite big city. for me i need to be near the countryside near by for walking an cycling. and leeds is perfect for this.

i like have a view when i am making music, which i havent got at the moment. but i will probably leave moving for a couple of years until
i get that big record deal ;-)
just live an hour from the good parts. countryish?
I've lived on the borders of west london my whole life but recently moved into london ( stoke newington ). I agree I have no time to make music but I am dedicating my every waking ( non-working ) hour to it. It helps get out of the world of internet marketing and settle down...

London's ruffness doesnt bother me to be honest just because I'm from a area which is not as a dangerous but people "try" to be from london so they start stuff alot more. Stoke Newington/Dalston is quiet compared to Slough!

I have trouble finding google idm/downtempo/art sound gig's in london all the gigs are in the mid lands/north.
yeah we have good gigs up north.
everyone says london scene is good. but tbh whenever i do a gig there its pretty pants
I'd like to know where to go to be honest, I see the odd gig like Richard Devine at T House and Ochre at 93 feet east! I've heard something about a pub called the Flea pit but I'm still in the dark on where to look.
I have no time for making music these days either. Work + Girlfriend + Shopping + Housework + Pets + Home Improvement + Minimal Social Life + organising Stfu = no free time
ooh go to corsica studios sometime - elephant and castle. funktion one sound system. liberal door staff. cheap drunks.
what could go wrong!
I used to go to uni in Elephant so I know just where that is. Not somewhere I'd like to hang around at night mind ;)

I will check it out though!
Hey packetst0rm..

I live up the road from you, I'm based in Tottenham.

I've performed at the fleapit before and it's an alright place. My mate runs a night once every two months called immersion. If you ever fancy hooking up then drop me a line.
Detroit, birthplace of techno
London, Birthplace of Dubstep :D

Fora sounds like a plan! Give me a shout if you hear of any good gigs going on...
well... i'm sure London is better than Marseille !
packetst0rm: there is this on tonight that is part of a HighPoint LowLife showcase/tour: link
