On top of all my millions of other past times (running businesses, making pizzas from scratch and drinking coke) I've been preparing an acoustic gig in an (as yet) empty supermarket.
Tesco bought a shop in Cambridge's most vibrant and exciting part of town, Mill Road, and until it gets opened (much to the disgust of most of the locals) a small group have moved in commandeered it and used it for such pursuits as rollerskating, showing films, sports and, this coming Thursday, the first ever gig that I've orchestrated. Well, the first one with more than one person playing anyway...

I'll post some pics and vids after the event, but I'm really excited to be playing live. Its not electronic music by any means, but I'm very proud of how we song, of the songs I've written and how amazing the drummer is. Here's a rehearsal vid, in case anyone is interested...

Good that youve done this.
I live next door to a big old pub that closed down in November 2006 and has sat empty since as the developer cannot get planning permission. It was a famous jazz venue as well. On friday, there was a fire [the developer was on holiday] that they blamed on 'kids' but its believed that it was started deliberately so the developer could get permission through faster to turn it into flats, etc and make a bundle. My flatmate said that we should have squatted it and turned it into a community centre and so it would have gone back into the hands of the locals but alas, a bit late now.

Thanks Chris - yeah, that's kinda exactly what these peeps are trying to do. Just make it something USEFUL, rather than just another supermarket. Like the world needs any more Tescos. It's particularly sensitive where the place is, cos it's always been home to hundreds of little specialty shops, the kinda thing you dont get very much round here any more. Real butchers, greengrocers, places selling curry and flowers and cakes - lots of nice little places that you can spend a day visiting. Well, until this new shop presumably puts them out of business by undercutting them all...
Anyone anywhere near Cambridge who fancies coming down, or even playing?

Yeah, that'd be pretty fuckin cool huh? Would anyone fancy such a thing, in principal? I could definitely organise such a thing if there was peeps interested in playing....

A piece of Glasgow's history was knocked down recently (Partick Central train station ticket office) to accomodate a brand new Tesco. There has been widespread public disapproval, including this website. It hasn't even been given the official go-ahead yet the building got demolished anyway, go figure.
Incidently in Glasgow, it is alarmingly common for buildings to mysteriously go on fire requiring demolition only to be replaced with "luxury" flats sometime later...
PS I would heartily approve of an Stfu Cambridge!

Get copies of Private Eye magazine for the last 10 years and check the 'Nooks and Corners' column - it usually reports on various building that are going to be listed/get a pre-listing visit from National Heritage and mysteriously either catch fire or have all the internal décor smashed to fuck by the developers.
It would be good to get a directory type site going of past abuses and future buildings for people to keep an eye on and then maybe even push for prosecutions.
