--> I have heard rumors about this, and have talked to different producers out there i know about this. I think a electronic music festival in portland would be really successful. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with festivals or had any input about making this possible.

Strategy summed it up pretty well. One other thing: Portlanders seem to have no problem supporting big name electronic acts when they come to town.
I've seen Autechre here a couple times, and Prefuse 73, or whoever else, and usually those groups sell out when they play here.
Also, Portland still has a fairly young electronic scene. The indie rock thing has been going strong for years, but the electronic scene hasn't taken off to the same degree.
As far as Decibel goes, Seattle is a bigger town than Portland, with alot more big business sponsors to lure bigger name artists. It's a nice festival, but the reason so many non-musicians show up, is because they're there to see Richie Hawtin or Justice.
So if anyone knows Richard D James, and has $10 g's to throw at him, we'll be set.

but, hey, people like what they are familiar with I guess."

familiar with. sure. like people who drive across the country and only eat at denny's instead of sampling the regional cuisine. in some ways it's cultural conditioning to be afraid of the unknown or something and of course the same old shit w/people wanting to feel like they belong to some kind of group or are part of some special secret.

I've been helping out w/ PDX Pop Now since Portland Radio Authority is streaming the whole thing, and the amount of time put into it and raised is incredible! Maybe I'm reapeting earlier posts, but that's the problem imo, the $$$.

Coco, Jef and I had a few meetings about 6 months ago talking about doing one this summer, but we dropped the ball. I know that if we had a set team of people who were willing to put in the effort and who know people, we could get one going next summer.

our plan was a 2 day event. Big act on Friday night @ holocene cause Scott would be cool w/ it. Then Sat afternoon through night doing something @ Someday, Backspace, and some other venue really close by so people didn't have to walk far. Cover at each club or a wristban for all 3. If it were almost all local acts, and if most artists played for free to build the scene, we could samve a lot of money.

just ideas ...

Oh, and Jef had a website last year w/ ideas. I forgot what it was

thank you guys for all the responces alot of good ideas. If anyone is down to get something going, a once a month thing or something bigger i am really down to help out.

there are a handful of monthlies centered around electronic music in pdx already. small venues but good tunes. they're all pretty chill though. there are some good one off parties going on this summer. check the calendar in the coming months.

Haven't read the majority (sorry don't have time!) but this has been discussed before. Make it happen this time! Better still affiliate it to Stfumusic. We need our first US show! If you need advice sign up to the forum and ask away.

it's true...A while back I was super motivated and inspired by decibel and the BEAF fest in bellingham and wanted to put together something in portland. i put lots of thought and chats into the idea...i agree, the biggest problem with creating a festival is money. there are also problems regarding the placement of appropriate venues in the city/getting around the city, etc. (i made maps and shizz dawgs...MAPS!)

i agree that something should happen on a small scale and grow it into a large one...a full saturday event from morning until night at one or two venues would be rad. i'm in full support! get some westcoast peeps to come...whatever..make it the STFU style meetups...i'm down!

oh the forum i made is here:

last post was january of 07.
let's bum rush the blues festival next year with drum machines in hand and turn it into PEMF.

I went to a party some friends played at that had a couple of the glitchmob guys on the bill. (i got comped thank god) it was a $20 cover! and it sold out!!!! in a huge venue. you couldn't fucking move in the place. yeah.. in portland."

hahahah! Sounds familiar! I thought I'd check in and see what's up here. This thread cracked me up! What about a house (location, not genre) party electronic music festival? Make the venues super small so it feels like people are there. Seriously, though, i miss the shit out of Portland.

ok, so when's the party!

the forests r the new warehouse's...

personally, i feel that interest in em in pdx has been waning in the last couple of years. there's still mad talent in town, it's just that there aren't a whole lot of people who go out to see their peers play or run a weekly em night at pub or whatever these days.

totes. pdx = dead for electronic music. there are still lots of great producers. however, in terms of "electronic music" shows, the only things that get any attendance are minimal-scarf/hipster-techno parties and shite breaks/dnb nights, which leave a lot to be desired in quality, depth, and appreciation.

between two and five years ago there was a nice surge and it would have gone off. even the minimal/scarf scene brought some great talent and packed rooms . albeit, most of the attendees would have been the producers/performers themselves and their immediate friends, but there were enough floating around to make it crowd. nowadays, you're lucky if your local performers even show up, yet alone a group to follow 'em.

em is just off of everyone's radars here, but who knows... it might come back...

here's a mildly related tangent... dubstep seems to be catching on a tad. the local output is nothing to write to the uk, er... home, about, but the recent interest has resulted in some booking of quality acts. skream on the 7th! loefah and kode9 have been here recently, as well. it's not all as far off from the experimental scene and you might think.

Just like all things in Portland, it'll never fly outside the city limits.

hmm.

meef! i miss ya man. and you're right about the forests.

come back gasp!

Yeh, the forest is the new warehouse... That's where the big party should be. Take advantage of the outdoors in summer in the nw.
