--> My thoughts:

How nifty would it be to release an EM411 user album. Net release, print on demand, whatever, which is comprised of cover songs done by em411 users, of their inspirations? I'd be glad to dedicate space and bandwidth to host such a project or offer ftp services. Example album titles or thoughts anyone? Here is an example snippet of what I'm thinking (a cover version I'm working on of Kraftwerk's "Computer Love"):

fredo told me once who to pay for cover tune license. i forget.
i think em411 original content album would be gangbusters.

mister harry fox

there's some interesting stuff about releasing cover sobngs (legality etc) on the cdbaby faqs.
I think it's quite a good idea to do covers to make it totally accessible to people who don't know about em411. It could tie it together in a good way; considering the diverse range of sounds people make on here it might be difficult to make a coherent album that people want to actually listen to - covers album might get around that... just a thought...

if its being released for free, who cares about the legality?

you don't have to pay at all to do a cover, so long as there was one created already. You only have to send the publishing portion of the moolah to the person who owns the publishing. But basically as long as there was already a cover made, you don't even need to get permission. But of course all of the sound has to be created by you.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
i never thought of doing a cover- remixes with samples of originals yeah but not covers
my inspirations are mostly techno- itd prbably be fun to copy some of those tracks- fun or really difficult and annoying
but im so useless/lazy/disorganised/defeatist/depressed/etc that you shouldnt expect me to actually do anything- ill think about it though

regarding copyright etc: if theres no words in it then can i just go ahead and copy it? nobody owns a sequence of notes do they?

they do
that's what's copyright is all about
owning notes over chords
in italy, if i'm not mistaken, there have to be 14 notes in common to two melodies to actually call for copyright infringement

I've always wanted to cover an electronic tune. Like an early AFX or Nightmares on Wax song or some old Techno like Underground Resistance or Forgematers. That would be quite fun I think.

yep - i'm up for this

if im going to cover a techno track then im guessing its more likely to be ok because theres probably only 3 or 4 notes in it and its all about the timbre which surely cant be copyrighted

I want to make an Iron Maiden cover.
