--> Hi emers, all...

I can barely contain my happiness after receiving the used Glockenspiel I purchased yesterday in the mail today. It's from the 50s, of Deagan make. I was told by a very generous and wildly knowledgeably sales person about another store selling this old instrument. He explained that it was rusty and in slight disrepair, but that the metal they used back then was much better than anything produced today. So I made the plunge and bought it, and boy do I feel happy about it.

I'm going to do a cluster video of The Turn and The Sad Song in the next two months with this creature. Should be fun! In the meantime, feast your eyes!

Cooool!! Can't wait to hear/see how you use it in your work. Enjoy, Fredo.

Now can somebody do a piece explaining the diffs between the glockenspiel, xylophone, metallophone, vibraphone, and stylophone?

OK, onward to wikipedia!

gamatam, thanks man! Any particular place the bell should be struck? I think they are pretty loose already, and actually, it hasn't been refurbished. I was suggesting maybe it needs a refurbishing though, as when I hit the bells sometimes they position themselves too close to the little metal studs in between and that does indeed mute them a bit...

oxymoron, add celeste and dulcitone to that list please! I was led to believe that a glockenspiel is kind of a very small celeste without the keyboard mechanism...

Fredo, I think your going to have to experiment to find out what is dampening the keys, maybe the the felt is too worn out or something?! The Bell-lyre had a hole on either side of the key and nothing in between the keys.

When it comes to hitting them, the middle will give the roundest sound, but could probably get some nice sounds by striking the edge with a metal bar, or maybe hard wood or .. damn, I was I could come play

Cuz I put away the xylophone
borrow me a glock
Took a little trip to the second hand shop
tried to sand it
clean of the rust spots
ding-ding-da-dnig-ding-da-dingy-ding-ding

looking forward to some clanglorious music, Fredo!

wish you could too! I'm thinking for my next album all bells, percussion, sine wave, voice and the occasion brass ensemble. This is for me the most heavenly of orchestrations!

What model did you...oh...a glockenspiel. Not nearly as exciting, but that's cool, I guess. I'd rather get a new Glock (G19), but that's just me.

holy masculine ensemble batman!

I know somone who has wired guitar pickups under each note, sounds lovely though an amp.... might be worth looking into...
wow, very cool idea. Thanks, man.

you shouldnt blog about glockspiels here on em411. its not electronic, is it?

looks beautifuL! look forward to hearing it

skab...took the letters right from my keyboard! haha

Glock Sucker.

sorry, had to be said, and apparently jdg is asleep.

hahahahh, indeed. It must always be said. Actually, I was thinking about making the title of the blog, sock my glock, but... well, thought twice, thankfully.

I got my hands on one from a high school (from the 60's apparently) and for CHEAP!

What a fantastic tool for further treatments...

BTW, I actually think creating a multi-sample of it would lose the magic... Much of the beauty is in the ringing overtones..etc...(plus the actual method of performance.)
