recently i was playing around with reason and remembered just how much fun it is to hook up the matrix sequencers to combinators. using the curve output to control all kinds of things.
i had a blast. then i got sad. i remembered that even with rewire you can't send midi out of reason, and i really prefer ableton live since:
it can monitor / record incoming audio
i am use to / like the built in effects
the racks with parallel processing are really neat
so i went looking for something similar to matrix that i could use in live, i found some cool looking things for the pc, but i use a mac. i tried to make something in max, but in between my max 5 trial, live 6 and rewire, something just wasn't working right. then i remembered someone on here had made something similar so i hit the google and found yghartsyrt's "rattatat".
his patch did exactly what i was thinking about trying to make, except for a few small changes, and i really wanted 8 sequencers instead of just 4.
rather than build something almost exactly the same from the ground up in my max 5 trial (which only had 3 days left) i emailed nils and he was kind enough to send me the patch so i could tinker with it.
here is the result, i just finished this with literally minutes left on my max 5 trial. its basically just like yghartsyrt's original patch, except for the following changes:
max step length of 64 instead of 32
8 sequencers instead of 4 (to match up nicely with live 6 rack macro controls)
reverse mode - plays yours sequence backwards
random mode - jumps around randomly in your seq on beat

i have a few more modifications i want to make, but my trial just ran out, so i'll have to hold off for a bit. i would love to hear any ideas anyone else might have for it.
big thanks to nils - he really deserves the credit for the original patch.
he has recently made it available to anyone that wants to modify it:
