Electronic Music other: Max MSP CC Seq
Store Written August 11 2008
recently i was playing around with reason and remembered just how much fun it is to hook up the matrix sequencers to combinators. using the curve output to control all kinds of things.

i had a blast. then i got sad. i remembered that even with rewire you can't send midi out of reason, and i really prefer ableton live since:
it can monitor / record incoming audio
i am use to / like the built in effects
the racks with parallel processing are really neat

so i went looking for something similar to matrix that i could use in live, i found some cool looking things for the pc, but i use a mac. i tried to make something in max, but in between my max 5 trial, live 6 and rewire, something just wasn't working right. then i remembered someone on here had made something similar so i hit the google and found yghartsyrt's "rattatat".

his patch did exactly what i was thinking about trying to make, except for a few small changes, and i really wanted 8 sequencers instead of just 4.

rather than build something almost exactly the same from the ground up in my max 5 trial (which only had 3 days left) i emailed nils and he was kind enough to send me the patch so i could tinker with it.

here is the result, i just finished this with literally minutes left on my max 5 trial. its basically just like yghartsyrt's original patch, except for the following changes:
max step length of 64 instead of 32
8 sequencers instead of 4 (to match up nicely with live 6 rack macro controls)
reverse mode - plays yours sequence backwards
random mode - jumps around randomly in your seq on beat

if you are interested you can download it here:

i have a few more modifications i want to make, but my trial just ran out, so i'll have to hold off for a bit. i would love to hear any ideas anyone else might have for it.

big thanks to nils - he really deserves the credit for the original patch.
he has recently made it available to anyone that wants to modify it:

ps: things you might need to know:
osx only
it uses rewire so start up live first, then start rattatat 1.5
the first time you launch rattatat 1.5 it registers itself as a rewire target, so you will have to restart live before things work right. which means closing rattatat 1.5 first then closing live, then relaunching live then relaunching rattatat 1.5 - this is only necessary the first time you run it though.

you will need to set up whichever midi "port" you choose in your live prefs to enable "remote".
looks cool. looking forward to play with it. it's really a shame, that em got rid of the patches-scetion. that always was a good repository for inspiring patch-ideas
looks excellent! +1 sad. where have the good times gone?
awesome! what do the 'connect automation' buttons do?
you know how when you enter midi map mode in live, you click on the ui element you want to map then live waits for you to turn your midi knob, move your midi slider, or play the midi note you want to assign to that ui element?

the connect automation button simply sends a CC message with whatever channel and CC number you have assigned for that sequencer with a value you 127 so live will think you moved a real midi knob.

in the screenshot i provided the top left seq's connect automation button should map to ableton live as 1/10 if you leave the settings the way they are now.

yghartsyrt already had that brilliant feature in there which gets around not being able to just manually type in your midi macro assignments you want to use in live.
ah very smart! thanks
