I was watching a doc called Metal: A Headbanger's Journey and they mentioned that Wagner loved heavy bass so much that he added a new instrument to the orchestra, this enormous double bass that's like two stories tall. They show a picture of these two mustachioed gentlemen playing it - one's standing on a chair or something to reach the neck and the other is bowing.
In summary, he was a Jew-hating ass but at least he liked the deep bass!
