--> Totally off topic, but interestng, I assure!

As many of you know I live in Reading, Berkshire, UK. Reading is amongst many things on the main flight path for Heatrow airport (London). At 20nm you get to see the stacks and flaps appear before the under carriage comes down for final approach. During daylight hours the Sky of Reading is the place for binocular wielding geeks hoping to spot an A380 or 747-800.
During the night is another matter. the skies are dead, bar a few high-altitude planes, and more and more often, some stranger aircraft.
During the 2003 Gulf war it was a frequent sight to see the legions of b-52's fly over from Fairford to Iraq. I remember when the Bagdhad bombings were kicking off, the pictures of the '52's' taking off gave us enough time time get outside to watch them fly over in ladder formation. The immpossible wingspan, and death-hum of the engines fascinated us. it must have been very hard to cope with the sound of those planes coming over your neighbourhood, if you were the victim.
More recently the bombing has ceased. Yet I still have a intense fascination of the aircraft that fly by at night.
Most notible is what I call the 'groaner'. I call it so as it makes a huge cavernous groan as it pases through the night sky. At an estimated 15-20,000ft my windows vibrate for about 10mins as this beast flies over once a night every night, like when a low-flying chopper does. It is often loud enough to wake my family up, we have often peered outside to watch the lights of a mystery plane fly over, the sound receding long after the sight.
When I lived in Somerset, I used to live near a US airbase. During my lunch breaks in the summer I used to be entertained by the local boys in F-16's practicing their dogfight skills in the clear summer air. The speeds and manouvers were breath-taking. the thunderous sounds of the above speed-of sound feats were reached. My own personal airshow.
Just tonight, I have seen a plane of the same size as an F16, fly 5 times as fast, making manouvers much tighter than an F16 can make in dogfight, and appear to be simply going from A to B, yet be totally silent. I mean totally silent, as I was in remote woodland at the time and this thing transversed the horizons in less than a minute! Not a flying saucer, it had its flight lights on, like a regular plane.

One during the day. I call the hairdryer. Imagine a Leerjet shaped aircraft (think pop-stars, oil tycoons, etc.) yet larger, like a passenger plane. You know, the two engines at the back, swept back wings, etc. This one was different. Whilst retaining the general shape of a Leerjet, it had a remarkable difference, as it banked it revealed a shark-fin style tail fin, in other words the tail fin went down aswell as up ( see diag if i can link it). Two followed in close formation. Maybe a test flight?

I save the best till last
Two years ago was walking back from said woodland after a picinc with my wife and son. walking up the hill into the urban area in which I live, I noticed something very odd in the white sky. It resembled a lamp post, about 30ft in length, a few inches wide, hovering about 1000ft. Maybe someone made a crazy helium balloon. we laughed about it and watched this floating black rod, when suddenly it pitched to horizontal, and darted over to another part of the sky. 'That wasn't caused by wind', I said out loud. It was now in a stationary place and started to windmill, progressivley faster, before halting totally, then it whizzed back to it's starting spot. I had already started taking photos, of this 'Rod' as I had already my analogue camera with me.We were able to se it on most of the journey home, when I got home the children of my neighbour were already in the garden yelling and screaming about the 'thingy'. Their father came out screaming about people trying to scare his children. I will never forget him pausing, half sentance to gawp, slack jawed at the sky. The stick was dancing from side to side.
Not long afterwards a cesna light-aircraft was flying over head. It was heading close to our 'pole'. From our viewpoint it eclipsed the rod and proved the scale of the thing, it was much larger than we had anticipated. The Cesna, probably not expecting such a sight banked back towards wycombe dipping its wing 3 times, an effort to say to us, 'we saw it too!'
After the plan had gone, the thing was there for no more than 5 minutes, before fading away. There was no more comercial aircraft for the rest of the day. lots of choppers in there place!. No shit!

I have many others to tell. I'm not a beleiver in Martians, etc. I just think there is some amazing technology thatis going on up there in the sky.

call me stupid, pictures are on their way

OOOH!!
i love stories like this....i love hearing the theories too.

three friends of mine absolutely swear on their lives and the lives of their families that they saw a 'UFO'
.....not to say aliens, just something that they could not explain. it was about 2.30am....they went into the back yard for a cigg, after a little party, one of them saw a bright light moving across the sky behind the church spire and alerted the others....when it came back into view it was closer and kept getting closer until it was REALLY close....like a few streets away, hovering 50-100m above the ground. they said it was BIG and very bright and sort of saucer shape but was still......not spinning or anything. after resting there for 10-15 seconds it instantly shot off in an arc motion at unbelievable speed....seeming to change shape.....asif to be going at warp speed or something...like in a sci-fi movie. it went out of sight behind the church spire and they didnt see it again.

i spoke to 2 of them the day after. and the other one a few days after that. all their stories and descriptions were exactly the same. all of them were wide eyed, talking fast, excited and a bit jumpy. they seemed really really genuine....not a hint of bullshit. and they are reliable guys too.

also, last year (i think) there was a great documentary about the 'UFO' phenomenon. it was either advertised as, or it was called..... 'UFO's:whats really been in our skies for the last 60(?) years'....something along those lines anyway. i cant remember what channel it was on, but i think either one of the bbc channels or channel4
If anyone could tell me what it was called i would LOVE to try and find it again, cos it was f'ing brilliant!!!!!

it basically started at the beginning of modern day UFO sightings with pilots in WWII reporting what became known as 'foo-fighters'.....and also this circle structure on the top of a hill, which was spotted on an aerial reconnaissance mission.....it was only after the war that the US got to investigate further and found a huge bunker under that hill that had been barricaded/blown up when the war ended.
anyway, cut a long story short, there are reports and documents pointing to (from various scientists at the time etc etc) the germans developing an experimental anti gravity engine that was like a big bell shaped object with a metallic liquid inside, that when fed with large amounts of electricity lifted off the ground, inside that bunker!! conveniently a few miles away over a hill was a huge power station with MASSIVE ducts running underground from the power station and emerging right in the centre of that circular structure on top of that hill-bunker where the so-called anti-gravity engine was being developed. then after the war the german scientists were 'recruited' by the US.....it goes on from there in detail, all the way through to more recent sightings and developments in technology. amazing stuff

maybe my favorite documentary of all time!! it was done BRILLIANTLY...never forcing an opinion onto you. it just presented all the evidence and let you make your own mind up. ive been into ufos and things since i was a kid. if you like this sort of thing you should definitely watch this!!!

holly crap thats a long post (for me)
can you tell i like this kind of thing

heh, i was into this a lot when i was younger, even went to see timothy good when he was on tour while i was in bristol, was funny when the majestic12 documents he based so much of his books on were exposed as fake: link

according to the cosmic trigger by robert anton wilson (not exactly the most reliable source but the point he's making is fairly self-evident), somebody somehwhere (the reference is more specifc in the book) did a study comparing sightings in mexico of the virgin of guadalupe to sightings in USA of UFOs and found that the two were phenomenologically very similar. eg, flash of light in the sky, otherworldly, disrupted sense of passing time etc.

the point is that we live in a spiritually poor country so instead of seeing a "vision from god" we see "things that are totally inexplicable and possibly dangerous". the idea is that humans are going to have weird experiences where we see stuff that oesn't properly fit into what we understood of everyday reality, and how we relate to such experiences is very much determined by the cultures we live in.

maybe you saw the aurora. i never saw it, only heard about it, i have a friend who swears he saw it once.
but who knows.

The problem with that kind of study is that it don't really bother examining the facts
You can only make such comparisons if you take the broadest view of the phenomenon without caring for the details, and that's what a scientist does, caring for the details that don't fit with the assumed mainstream conception of something
Drawing patterns like that don't make much sense, I hardly see where the methodological difference lies between that approach and Von Daniken's crazy comparisons between old myths and ufology

St. louis has it's share of this too, being once the home of Mcdonnell Douglas, and now the home of a lockheed plant (I thinks that's who bought them)
But anyway they used the st.louis county skies all through out the 80's and 90's to test new aircraft.
Many of them breaking the sound barrier.
So growing up it wan't uncommon for me to hear 10-12 sonic booms a day.

Definitey. I don't know why anyone's first instinct when they see something they can't explain is to go with the most unlikely scenario.
People know that airforces all over the world test top secret aircraft all the time.

Fredo said: "I used to believe that I had been abducted... I had had some very intense experiences in my sleep, experiences that were definitely not dreams, they were certainly filled with much more tangible sensations and incorporated short fat grey goblin-like creatures taking me down under the ground towards a sinister but amazing light. Of course I hadn't been abducted, but these things were so real. In fact, when I awoke from this state one of the times I saw flashes of light in my room and heard (and felt) a voice screaming into my ear "THEY WERE REAL!""

Fredo, have you considered sleep paralysis as the cause? (Link is to wiki article.)

I gave head to 30 martians one time. They told me I could be the president of the united states.

Eheh, nice article
Now, presenting Condon as the prototype of serious scientist and Hynek as an inconsequent dreamer is bigger a hoax than the Loch Ness, but whatever...
