Electronic Music other: Music recommendation site
Store Written September 24 2008 , Tags: music recommend, programming
I wrote a music recommendation website.

It is here: link

The recommendations come from automatically collected data: artists who have played gigs together, artists on the same label, artists who have been recommended by a critic or reviewer, artists who admire each other.

I'm really interested in getting feedback from people on em411 because I am worried I haven't gathered enough data about electronic artists.

Thanks!

dope i can never find anything that sounds like hitler

there doesn't seem to be any em411 artist on there, so get it sorted!

seems cool, tho
one real suggestion is to have more than five artists

also maybe a way that users can input their prefs and then get voted pertinent by other users. dont make us register. democracy!
Thanks so much for the feedback, everyone.

Yes, I really want to get em411 artists up. I'm looking into how to scrape the site to grab artist data and connections between them.

Only showing 5 artists is a conscious choice, and perhaps a wrong one. I find too many recommendations to be overwhelming. Anyone else have any perference either way?

And, yes, user recommendations is definitely in the works. I've worked real hard to not require user registration for anything except the automatron (automatic recommendations). It will stay that way for user suggestions.
A next button?
i would have the recommendations go as deep as they go, with the top voted recos at the top. 5 per page maybe
Yep, both great suggestions. Recommendations are ordered by their score (calculated from the authority of a source and user feedback). A next button is a good idea. However, I am definitely going to only show recommendations that score above a certain threshold.

i have a 7" from a band called hitler.
it's as bad as it sounds.
Cool project.

I tried out a few, some good suggestions came up. One example where some fine tuning might be required, the eventuality that two acts might share a name.

I entered Darkthrone, the first suggestion was Mayhem. The metal band from Norway I assume was what was intended, but the 'hear' link played some hip hop, presumably some other act named Mayhem.
Yeah, different bands with the same name are currently treated as the same band. This is on my to-sort-out list.

Thanks very much for the feedback.
Thanks very much for the suggestions, again. I have responded to you guys. It is now possible to view recommendations and then add your own. Also, I have also upped the maximum number of recommendations to 10.

FWIW, I think 10 looks fine, its not a sensory overload.
