--> Hey all,

I originally wrote this blog last night, but must have deleted it while trying to update it by mistake.

Anyway, I will attempt to reiterate:

I've been meaning to show you all some studio pics for some time now, but everything has been so disorganized / messy for the last while I just kept putting it off.

Well, yesterday I decided to tear it all down, have a think, and set everything back up (after a big clean too - I even sorted out my wire box that earlier resembled a wire ball). I'm pretty happy with the results.

As some of your read in one of my other threads, I recently picked up an E-mu XL-7 for a variety of reasons, but mainly to use as a sequencer and to get me away from the computer.

So far I am very happy with the performance of this machine. Though, I have decided that I do still need a laptop in my composing/production setup.

One of the things that bugged me about using my laptop with music before was that I have to tear it down and set it up day after day. I am a freelance designer/developer and sometimes musician for a living, and I am always out around the city in different offices with my 17" macbook pro. This machine still sits in the center of the setup next to my monitors as I am constantly moving files back and forth.

A couple months ago I inherited a couple old powerbook g4 15" machines that both had their own issues. With some love and care and a little help from my friend Cliph, we managed to merge them into one fully functional machine (on the left in the pics next to the S5000). I've decided to use this laptop as my main production machine. It will primarily run reason. I'm finding it very nice to have a "dedicated" machine to music, even though it's only a 1.33 GHz powerpc with 512MB ram (for now, I will upgrade it to 2GB soon). This machine is linked at the end of the midi chain using an Uno, and is also connected to the S5000 and mpd32 via usb.

It is likely I will still gig with my macbook pro (if I use a computer in the setup), simply because I know that anything that comes close to pushing the g4 will run just fine on it.

I've always liked to keep my recording and editing station separate, and this setup is no different. The macpro is the heart of my studio and is pretty much the go to place for any computer-intensive task. It's my main center for design, video, random web shit, communications etc. I picked this beast up about 10 months ago. Prior to this machine I had used windows exclusively in this position. I'm still getting used to not having acid and audition handy, as those were my programs of choice for editing and sequencing in the past. I'm using tracktion for now as I find it most similar to acid, but have yet to find a nice editor under osx. This machine is connected to an fa66 for recording purposes.

The room itself is a bit of an odd shape, and I've reorganized the furniture a few times. I think I have it at it's best right now. The small wall that jets out contains the heating/cooling, and there isn't much I can do about that. I find that when I sit at the macpro/editing station, or on the couches (where most of the pics were taken from) I get a pretty good reference of the sound. In fact, when you sit in the opposite corner it sounds beautiful as you are in the perfect spot to pick up those old fisher speakers.

Anyway, I hope that I remembered to write everything I covered last night, and that you all enjoy the pics!

It's not meant to be set up this way, the extenders are meant to be on either side of the corner piece. It seems stable enough though.

Looks amazing! You have a great setup. Very inspiring.

don't get me started on cat hair...ugh

Love the setup. Nice and clean and uncluttered. Good creatve space. Those korgs look tight.
is that an em 1 on the left then the esx and emx right?
That mpd32 looks solid.

Have you thought about spraying your xl-7 a diff color? I saw a guy do his black and it turned out pretty nice. I've been thinking of doing mine sky blue.

Oh wow, thanks for the comments everyone!

kidgamma: Really, this place is normally a big mess. I also smoke in my studio and the ash and misc crap goes everywhere. Cat hair really is my biggest issue though, I have two longer haired cats.

Purrpix: link

My cables are always tangled too, but at least the way it's set up right now I don't need to play around under there too much, depending on what I'm doing. I'm really trying to get used to a certain setup and make it work for me. I have a big wicker basket full of wires, I also sorted that out yesterday after two hours of fighting the tangled mess.

Spacing is working pretty much perfectly now, I can sit at the XL7 and rest my arms on either side of the mpd32, there's just enough room to work comfortably.

dkarma: It's an ER1 MK2 on the left, then the EMX and ESX. The 32 is pretty solid, I quite like it. Though, I really do prefer the action on the pads of the XL7.

I'm really not concerned with painting it. I'm just trying to learn to use the thing right now. Black would be nice though as it would definitely give the orange LEDs some contrast. I saw a pic of one that somebody painted blue/purple. It did look sweet, just not a big concern at the moment!

If I am really going to post catte pictures on here, this one has to be shown too...

...from an old apartment a couple years back:

i hope you didn't turn those speakers on that poor cat

I can't remember if they were on or off at the time, haha.

The black and white one does like to sit on the sub woofer though... and the spaghetti mess of wires!

nice one.. how's the sound in that corner there without traps?

edit - I totally misunderstood implex:

Yeah I could definitely use some traps. I really don't have the money for that right now, maybe in a couple months. The acoustics in this room are quite good as it is, I get by. I find the sound isn't so good when working on my machines though... something has to be done.
I was thinking the same thing, that scratchpost in front of the speaker is there for a reason .
Even I wouldnt tease dzee kittees like that.

Really nice place gorf!
Somehow it looks very sleek, couldnt say why though.
Cute cats as well.

Dammit! I lost my post. Nice setup gorf, looks like a wicked space to work in, which is what you want. What is the laptop on the left mounted on? I need something like that, atm i have mine sat on the stand from a music shelf between my RS and 2nd tier of an desk. The desk is built in to a corner so i'm kinda limited with ow i can set things up. I never thought i'd end up using hardware when it was installed but i'd love a layout like that! A good working environment is so important! The pics are inspiring, i've been wanting to redecorate for a while and i think i'm gonna havta get the paint brush out! Cheers.
