So, if you were paying attention, and I can't blame you if you weren't, I was thinking about buying an MPC. It has occurred to me that for the $1K-ish I would plop down for a properly upgraded new MPC1000, I could build a computer and buy an MPD. What I want to know is this: what, if any, audio/midi interface could I buy that could get me near this kind of latency and feel. I'm down right now to about 8ms and it's not feeling anywhere near what it should on percussion- I have a drum pad and it's frustrating sometimes.
So let's open this can of worms. I don't have much time for music, and that means not a lot of time to dig through tech support forums, call support, wait for patches and driver revisions, etc.
It seems an awful lot like nothing new has come out since the last time I asked this question...

what software do you use? and what soundcard do you have right now? I have a delta 4x4 and when i pair it with cubase, I have 4ms latancy at 512 buffer. I have a 3.6 ghs with multithreading single core. If I can get that with my crappy soundcard, you could build a single core for cheap if you buy the parts.
i usually notice latency when i use usb midi devices. When i use my audigy platinum I get no latency that is noticeable. someone said that the latency was because of the usb handshake...dunno, however I'd get an mpc and here's why. You can get your computer to do 10k different things, but sometimes it gets hard to narrow the scope even in terms of what prog. to use. When you have an mpc you know mostly where your boundaries lie.
I'm getting a mpc1000 when the $$ comes around. I'd buy that one out there on teh board right now if i had the $$. At 750 its a pretty good deal. Just cut out the computer entirely. dkarma said: " Just cut out the computer entirely." Still,you have a computer already?? old computer + good hardware >>> good computer, imo. IIRC the mpd16 is universally panned as a piece of lumpen lead because of the unresponsive pads. the padkontrol is a better bet. Or the mpd24.
someone on here said that they had the mpd32 and it was much better than the 16...dunno never used one
it seems to me that if you want something that will streamline your workflow then the mpc is it. you will have issues with a new computer, and, especially if it's one you put together yourself, you're way more likely to end up in tech support hell. latency lower than 8 ms is hard to come by. all signs point to mpc.
I'd go for the MPC. With it your time would be spent making music for the most part. I love my pc but a musical instrument it is not.
i have a mpd 24. with my macbook and ableton i hardly notice any latency. it's exactly like when i hit the table with my fingers. the sound just comes right. you 'd have that "drum" feeling.
my 2 cents. So what about the MPC500? I found it on novamuzik for like $389 and I like the looks of it too. Does it have the pad problem?
the mpc500 can have distortion problems when they've been on for a few hours, apparently. the mpc1000 is a much better idea, imo (esp. for the JJOS functionality)
An mpc500 for $400 that's tempting.
I think I am going to grab the 500 in spite of all the warnings, because I can take it in the car with me and work a little on my lunch break. I could just bring my junky little MP3 player along with stuff I think I might sample, and sample from it.
OH THE INDECISION!
Hell at that price I'm thinkin about ebaying some stuff and grabbin one.
