here's a story and i'm interested in your thoughts....
i played live in a small venue last Friday
there was an audience of 20 or so ....
the "headlining" act went off for some food whilst i was playing - which was fine
i was followed by 2 other acts and i got talking to one of them (we were sitting side by side) whilst the final band played.
they had a prog rock sound - live drummer - bass, guitar and keyboards - all out of a good PA (DB) which to my ears was loud.
anyway after their fourth song I was surprised to be told over the mic by a member of the bad to "shut up, stop talking and listen".
we had a bit of banter .... and it was fine - i was genuinely surprised they could even hear me .... and i guess i was struck by how my own expectation (i.e., that it is nice if the audience are enthralled in my music .... but if they are not and choose to talk - well thats their business) .... was so far removed from this guy - who was saying, 'we are playing and we expect you to listen and if you want to talk go somewhere else'....
rock n' roll!

thanks for your comments everyone
of course cbits is the most balanced yoda wisdom stylee - whilst zanf's & dkarma are funny and is what went through my mind....
it was a bit of a shock for me - as most people tell me to repeat what i'm saying cos i'm quiet and can mumble
however - i had been on stage and so had a previous act who i was talking to - so perhaps i was buzzing a bit and wanting to share ideas with them....
anyway ssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ;)

see now recording is different and understandable.
If someone is going to ask you to be quiet because they've spent a bunch of time and money getting recording equipment set up then talking through the set WOULD be alittle rude if you knew they were recording, but the better way to handle THAT situation is not to yell shut up over the mic, but rather embarrass you privately by letting you know in a whisper or quiet conversation that they were recording...the guy's still an egotistical asshole.

yea, i dont know, i mean, it would be ideal for everyone in a club or theatre to give a performer their complete attention, and some music calls for it, i went to a joanna newsom concert awhile ago, and it was pretty damn quiet, but there were people chatting, people talking here and there...its going to happen, your in public, people talk
i just dont think you can call someone out like that in a crowd and ask them to be quiet, i cant imagine that helping the mood of the room or performance

you should have yelled back CLASSY!
Then spent the next half an hour yelling FREE BIRD after every track.
Then at the end of the set you should have crumpled up some 1$ bills and thrown them at his feet telling him to buy some talent to go w/ "that nice guitar".

God I love Mingus. Mingus and Dolphy, This reminds me of a Dolphy recording.
There is this one "Live at the 10 spot" recording of Eric Dolphy where you can hear at the beginning Eric talking to a guy in the front row right before it starts
Dolphy-"What you got that on the table for"
Guy- "What? Whats that?"
Dolphy- "That shit, what you got there?"
Guy- "Oh, that shit? Thats some weed man."

craque said: ""shut up" is a little rude, at least it would be over here.
sounds like they're a little too serious about their prog rock tho.
a live drummer and amplification and they cared if people were chatting?
would they rather you not be there at all?"
i totally agree. music doesn't have to be THAT serious. they're neither jesus nor a preacher !
as Zanf said: throw your sh*it out on his face, and give him a big lesson with all the audiobulb work !
prog-rock ? what ?

I went to a Sigur Ros concert some years ago. It was much louder and more aggressive than the wimpy album stuff. They played an absolutely spellbinding set, and somewhere in the middle one of the songs (I've no idea which one) just built up and up to a giant break where everythign just went totally silent... but instead of holding silent for a beat, or two, the moment continued, and continued, and continued, everything frozen in total silence. Several thousand people afraid to breathe and just waiting for someone to cough, and no one did. Total silence!!! The tension was unbearable, gut wrenching, and amazing edge of seat action until the band finally dropped back into action like a half minute (eternity) later. I get shivers just thinking back on it. I don't know if such totally perfect moments can be repeated, I was glad to be there!

i played the same festival the night after. funnily one of the acts (who shall remain nameless) did ask for silence before he played. and he got it pretty much apart from me who gibbered through it.
personally i don''t care if someone talks or makes a bacon sandwich, i normally have headphones on and can't here them anyway.i do sometimes find it annoying when people talk all the way through gigs, but its a social setting so really what do you expect?

I was involved in organizing a free monthly around here about 6 months ago. It only ran for a couple months and we had a fun little thing happening while it lasted.
One night I was in the middle of my set and some whiny bimboesque girl walked in and started complaining about the music being too soft (not upbeat enough I guess) right next to me... practically in my ear. I found it to be very rude. It wasn't advertised as some uber-dance party or anything. It was a small listening space and we had a wide variety of music going on throughout the night (starting downtempo and gradually speeding up as people played). I later found out she was the girlfriend of one of the other organizers... She was obviously on some high horse and thought that she was pretty special.
I don't care if people talk or do whatever they want while I play... but honestly, don't bitch about something unless you can do it better yourself. I was very annoyed and almost stopped playing to tell her just that.
In your case I don't think you did anything wrong. It should be expected that people talk in a social setting. It's not like you were attending a classical live recording at Carnegie Hall.
PS dach: I envy that moment you experienced watching Sigur Ros, that would have been great! I've still yet to see them, grrr.

I was reading this interview (Neko Case on Pithcfork) last night and I thought this was a great qoute:
"I just think of my own experiences going to see shows. For example, I went to see Lucinda Williams in Vancouver and there was this Australian woman opening the show. Nobody had ever heard of her and she was all right, but there were people talking and she just started bitching them out like, 'I can't believe you're talking! You don't love music!' I thought, 'These people just paid to get into your show and they came to see Lucinda Williams, so if they're gonna talk a little bit, fucking get over it.' It would kill me if people felt like that at my show. A live show is one of the last holdouts of a thing that makes you feel a part of a community, where you'll go and maybe meet your future wife or boyfriend, or you're taking your sister to her first show. These are the things that you remember later in your life. So bands shouldn't come and act like, 'You're here to stand and be quiet while we do our thing and it's fucking important!' That shit is laughable, arrogant, and stupid. "
