I have a few analog synths that have good pc editors.
The best for me is the waldorf pulse. Its delightful, extremely easy to use and wonderful deep sounds.
The editor I use is from rekon. link
The other synth I use is an oberheim. Till now, I always used software to get at these sounds.
I never thought I would buy a preset hardware synth. After all, software synths come with thousands of sounds. However, secondhand analogs like this are cheaper than some software.
The unit is great for strings and brass sounds. I wanted to get into programming, so I fired up the editor that came with it. link
Here I ran into a snag. I thought the editor would help me get a smooth sweep (the matrix doesnt take too kindly to sysex) but messing with the vcf controls on the editor proved me wrong. Stair stepping all the way.
Seeing as this is a community that knows about patch creating, firmware updating, JJOSsing and kickass little apps in general... I put it to thee.
Is there some way to make the matrix handle midi better, or at least to avoid stair-stepping on the filter?
Cheers.

i have the same problem with my matrix 6r.. not only does it step, but there are weird random delays while i'm trying to tweak. it sucks. I don't know if there is a way around it.

thing is, the sound doesn't suck, the real time tweaking does.
shame, really.
edit; the random thing is probably a response delay

from that link:
"As Till pointed out, there is some steppyness with the Matrix, but this is just the slow reception in the synth." (swissdoc)
"I remember the filter cutoff knob was transmitted somehow by SysEx. And it took a while for the synth to act to it. So it was impossible to use the controller for real time filter sweeps." (Till Kopper)
Perhaps this answers my problem? Maybe the pc editor also sends filter control using sysex, and this can be fixed.
For now I use a second filter hooked up to the matrix. Which is stupid, because the matrix has a beautiful filter.
A lfo modded sweep sounds great.
It really is a pain to find info on the net about these and their midi implementation.

Nothing but pain in trying to module filter cutoff by MIDI. But the EGs are nice. Wish some asshole didn't steal mine. I remember patch 123 being the bomb.

I love the sound of the presets on the thing- I can't imagine tweaking them!

By my reckoning you are stuck with these problems while editing. But for playback there is continuous controller data, which the synth should be able to handle without latency (though depending on how wide/deep you set the range, it may still stair step)
from: link
The Matrix 1000 is programmed to respond to Pitch Bend, Aftertouch, Breath Control, Mod Wheel, Sustain and Pedal Control {not every effect is used on every patch). The Pedal Control can be reassigned to any MIDI Continuous Controller number.

Sorry if im pointing out something you already know.
Some synths let you map parameters other than pitch to the pitchbend control, which is higher res (less steppiness)
(edit: ah yes bb01 - the other member of the vx90 user group - i.e. yes you already know this)

back from some time off.
hey nutjob vx users anonymous!
no, thats the thing with the matrix, you need to do the editing from software ofcourse - but the box itself on the receiving end is the limitation here.
been reading up on it; link
edit; link parameter 21 is apparently a known problem, without a possible cause listed however.
